Nudity, hate speech and spam: Facebook reveals how much content it kills

After opening up its Community Standards to the public for the first time, Facebook has now released a Community Standards Enforcement Report, covering six areas, including graphic violence, adult nudity and sexual activity, terrorist propaganda, hate speech, spam, and fake accounts.

Facebook said it took down 583 million fake profiles in the first three months of the year, usually within minutes of their creation.

Facebook said it removed 2.5 million pieces of content deemed unacceptable hate speech during the first three months of this year, up from 1.6 million during the previous quarter. A Bloomberg report last week showed that while Facebook says it's become effective at taking down terrorist content from al-Qaida and the Islamic State, recruitment posts for other US -designated terrorist groups are found easily on the site.

In addition to the removal of these fake accounts, the company acted on 21 million pieces of nudity and sexual activity, 3.5 million posts that displayed violent content, 2.5 million examples of the speech as well aS 1.9 million pieces of terrorist content.

The number of posts on Facebook showing graphic violence rose in the first quarter of this year from the preceding three months, possibly driven by the war in Syria, the company said on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, May 15, Guy Rosen, Facebook's Vice President of Product Management, posted a blog post on the company's newsroom.

In the United Kingdom, Facebook this week again resisted a request from British lawmakers to testify as part of their investigation into Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy that improperly accessed personal information about 87 million of the social site's users. The company has come under fire for failing to remove content that has incited ethnic violence in Myanmar, leading Facebook to hire more Burmese speakers.

Facebook has a policy of removing content that glorifies the suffering of others. All 836 million spam posts were flagged by an artificial intelligence program before human users reported them, according to the report.

Facebook is struggling to block hate speech posts, conceding its detection technology "still doesn't work that well" and it needs to be checked by human moderators.

The company estimated that for every 10,000 pieces of content seen on Facebook overall, between seven and nine of them violated its adult nudity and pornography standards.

Facebook says AI has played an increasing role in flagging this content. The company attributed the decline to the "variability of our detection technology's ability to find and flag" fakes. One potential flaw is that the data doesn't account for any bad content the company may have missed. Still, the fact that there are many issues with the way the company runs the social media platform doesn't detract from the fact that they are taking efforts to make the network a more inviting place that meshes with their content guidelines.
