Praising Winnie in her death is hypocritical , family tells SA government

South Africa's Winnie Mandela to be laid to rest in state funeral

Her casket was draped with the multi-colored South African flag and placed in the middle of the 37,500-seater stadium in front of a stage, decked in white and yellow flowers.

"She was very generous". Zenani said, "It was my mother who kept his (Nelson Mandela) memory alive".

Over the past week and a half it's become clear that South Africa, and indeed the world, holds men and women to different standards of morality.

"Like her, you show that we can be lovely, powerful and revolutionary, even as we challenge the lies that have been peddled for so long", she said, referring to her mother being sidelined by the ANC and much of society for her radicalism.

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa, who took office two months ago, offered an apology for the country's failure to honour Winnie for her contribution to the liberation of the country. "She bandaged our wounds ... we did not do the same for her", Ramaphosa said. "They are crying the loudest, more than us - who died for you", Malema said, before lambasting those who he believed had wronged the struggle veteran. After touching on the deep heartfelt long and unbroken friendship, De Lille dwelt on one key attribute of Winnie Mandela as a fighter.

The ceremony concluded 10 days of national mourning during which time hundreds of thousands of South Africans have paid tribute to the "Mother of the Nation" at her Soweto home and elsewhere.

Winnie Mandela is celebrated for holding together Nelson Mandela's shared dream for an anti-apartheid South Africa.

EFF leader Julius Malema, an admirer of Madikizela-Mandela who echoes her fiery rhetoric, said she had always put the country "above her own personal safety" in the fight against apartheid.

The crowd, which included former presidents Jacob Zuma, Kgalema Motlanthe and Thabo Mbeki, roared in approval. Mourners booed when the presence of scandal-tainted Zuma was publicly acknowledged. "She never stopped serving", civil rights leader Jesse Jackson said Friday. The pain you inflicted on her lives on in us.

"However, we are happy that after her death truth has been coming out one by one, ' she added".

The township of Soweto is hugely symbolic in South Africa as it became a crucible of black resistance to white minority rule which ended with elections in 1994.

She was particularly angered by former police commissioner George Fivaz, who only last week said nothing connected Madikizela-Mandela with the death of Stompie Seipei. In 1993 she was elected president of African Nationa Congress (ANC). He also thanked everyone who attended the service in Orlando Stadium, specifically the community of Soweto, which Madikizela-Mandela was a part of.

In 1991, a court found Madikizela-Mandela guilty of the boy's kidnapping and assault and sentenced her to six years in jail.

Most of the 38-year long marriage was spent living apart with Winnie left alone to raise their children.

The procession moved to Fourways, where members of the public braved the rain to line the street to catch a glimpse of the hearse.
