Pennsylvania school district gives teachers baseball bats to fight attackers

Superintendent Says Students Are Armed with Rocks In Case of a School Shooting | WNEP.com

Most of those candidates lost, largely due to facing well-resourced incumbents.

The attempts to protect students and teachers come after the Valentine's Day shooting that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

Munson said just the fact that it's now public knowledge there are bats in these classrooms may also deter someone from coming to school with a gun.

The head of teacher's union, Jon Cacchione, president of the Millcreek Education Association, supports the program and arming teachers with miniature baseball bats, but draws the line at effective weapons.

On Wednesday, more schools made the announcement they would reopen on Thursday.

"It's a last resort", Will Hall, schools superintendent said.

Regarding the district's concerns about Pelano's driving, the agreement said that during the current 2017-18 school year she "failed to stop for a red light while driving a district school bus, and drove at a speed in excess of a posted speed limit".

Baker said she knew students were there due to perseverance and commitment to good study habits and hard work.

Zahn said he is still speaking at School Board meetings regarding the schedule because he believes there is middle ground to be found.

Oklahoma Republican Gov. Mary Fallin approved teacher pay raises of about $6,100, but many educators say that's not enough because classrooms still need more money. "As (students) get younger, you have to plan more".

Carri Hicks, a fourth-grade teacher at Deer Creek, has been campaigning since last summer for Oklahoma City's Senate District 40. "I think it was a symbolic thing", Barish said. "It underlines in bold print why I am running for office".

Barish described the bats as the size of a souvenir. That is not an underpaid teacher's responsibility.

Otis Moses, a supervisor in the school district's meal services division, said day-to-day operations may differ from typical school days, but he said his team has pulled together to serve kids and support teachers through the walkout.

"I just decided now is the time to step out and help fund education the way it should properly be funded".

"You have to have time to daydream", she said.

Her son, Josh Martin, said his experience growing up as the child of a teacher gives him a valuable perspective, too.

"I could understand his point", Munson said. "When I saw them I laughed".
