OPCW 'enters Syria's Douma' to probe gas attack allegation

Syrians gather at the Umayyad Square in the capital Damascus to show their support for President Bashar al Assad and the Syrian military in the wake of the US-led airstrikes on Syrian government targets

Chemical weapons inspectors are waiting to go into Douma, near Damascus, to probe allegations of a chemical gas attack on April 7 that prompted last week's US-led response.

The three countries did not make their evidence public, and both the Syrian government and its ally Russian Federation have denied any chemical attack took place.

While the United States, France, and the United Kingdom all say the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad is to blame for the attack.

The missiles targeted Shayrat air base, it said - but did not say who fired the missiles.

In a report sent to the Security Council and obtained by AFP, the United Nations department of safety and security (UNDSS) said they were hoping to make arrangements that would allow the team to deploy "at the earliest possible time". This time, the U.S. did not act alone, but together with France and the United Kingdom, both permanent members of the UN Security Council.

What is happening in Syria?

The US and France say they have evidence that Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces used poison gas in the attack, but they have not provided any evidence, even after Saturday's punitive missile strikes.

Global inspectors were still waiting to visit the site of an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria on Wednesday, as the USA accused the Syrian government and its ally Russian Federation of trying to cover up the evidence.

With 11 days now having passed, concerns are growing that evidence could fall prey to tampering or be otherwise compromised. They are expected to gather soil and other samples to help identify the substances - if any - used in an attack.

Ken Ward, US ambassador to the OPCW, claimed on Monday that the Russians had already visited the site and "may have tampered with it".

The UK this week said Russian Federation was delaying investigations.

Mr Lavrov and others have also criticised the three countries for carrying out the strikes before the OPCW team could conduct their investigation. The town has been besieged as the government has been fighting to oust rebels from the greater eastern Ghouta region, just outside the capital of Damascus.

There were unconfirmed reports on Wednesday that cargo ships had docked at the Russian naval base of Tartus on the Syrian coast under the cover of smoke and aerosol gas to block satellite and drone sensors.

Two bombs filled with chemicals were reportedly dropped several hours apart on the town. Many were found with foam around their mouths, an indicator for suffocation.

Two US government sources spoke to The Beast on condition of anonymity.

How did the air strikes happen?

But House lawmakers emerging from their own all-members briefing in a secure facility in the Capitol building said administration officials focused on their legal justifications for launching the airstrikes, and for the targets.

The launches came the same day that the OPCW mission was set to start the probe into the alleged chemical weapons use in Douma, which the West had immediately blamed on Damascus.

"On arrival at site one, a large crowd gathered and the advice provided by the UNDSS was that the reconnaissance team should withdraw", he told a meeting at the watchdog's headquarters in remarks it later released.
