Gardner Protects Colorado's Legal Marijuana Industry - Senator Cory Gardner

Pot stocks surge on news Trump favours giving states latitude on legalization

Republican senator from Colorado on whether President Trump has the authority required to authorize a retaliatory strike on Assad regime, discusses Mike Pompeo's suitability to be secretary of state and potential agreement with the Trump administration to protect states' rights over the legalization of marijuana.

Cory Gardner of Colorado announced Friday that Trump made the marijuana pledge to him in a Wednesday night conversation. "Late Wednesday, I acquired a dedication from the President that the Division of Justice's rescission of the Cole memo shouldn't be going to impression Colorado's licensed marijuana enterprise". In light of Trump's phone call, the senator said he has had a change of heart.

In January, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded Obama-era guidelines directing federal prosecutors not to take action against those who were compliant with state-sanctioned cannabis regulations.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Gardner's account was accurate and the president supported states' rights in the matter.

Senator Gardner placed a hold on Department of Justice nominees until he confirmed that Colorado's rights would not be infringed. Only a fool would bet any money on it. Recreational marijuana has been legal in Colorado since 2014. Until then, it's just a promise, and accepting the promises of a pathological liar is never wise.

Matt Fox, a spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, which advocates state control of marijuana laws, said this was a positive step in the short and long term - as a signal to Sessions to get more in line with Trump's previously-stated views on marijuana policy and as motivation for lawmakers to seriously tackle marijuana policy reform. Cory Gardner, a Republican, said he'd received an assurance from the president on the states' rights' issue earlier this week. During the presidential campaign, Trump said in an interview with KUSA-TV in Colorado that he said "it's up to the states" on the marijuana issue.

But the Journal's sources say Trump wants the top Justice Department officials gone anyway: "Eventually, it will happen", a source said. "So we're reluctant to reward that sort of behavior".

By contrast, federal law defines the marijuana plant as a "Schedule I" prohibited substance that lacks "currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States". "But at the same time, we're anxious to get our team at the Department of Justice".

"My colleagues and I are continuing to work diligently on a bipartisan legislative solution that can pass Congress and head to the President's desk to deliver on his campaign position", he said in the statement. The Washington Post reported in August that Sessions' DOJ was effectively hamstringing the agency's research efforts by making it harder to grow marijuana.
