Brazil's Lula in talks to surrender to federal police

Brazil,Landless peasant movement blocked several highways around the country Friday morning in protest of Lula's arrest warrant

The lawyers of Brazil's disgraced former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva were negotiating the terms of his surrender with federal police on Friday after he missed the 5 p.m. (2000 UTC/GMT) deadline to hand himself in.

Last year, Moro convicted da Silva of trading favors with a construction company in exchange for the promise of a beachfront apartment.

Brazil's Supreme Court on Thursday rejected Lula's plea to remain free until he exhausts all his appeals, in a case he calls a political witch hunt.

Such technicalities "were simply a pathology that should be eliminated from the judicial world", Moro said in his statement.

"Freitas and the executive director of the CUT, JĂșlio Turra, participated in a meeting with popular movements, in which all the militants and workers living in Sao Paulo and neighboring towns were summoned to come to the headquarters of the Metalworkers" union, in San Bernardo del Campo, where there are already thousands of people. Hundreds spent the night sleeping on the street.

Congressman Jair Bolsonaro, a right-leaning legislator who is running second in the polls behind da Silva, summed up what many da Silva detractors were likely thinking.

It would be impossible for police to arrest him by force without the likelihood of major crowd trouble. "That is part of the coup that removed me from the presidency".

Cassio Goncalves, a labour safety specialist at the union headquarters, said Lula's Workers Party had not considered alternatives in the presidential race. He governed from 2003 to 2010, leaving office an global celebrity and with approval ratings in the high 80s.

Mr Lula's imprisonment is being celebrated on the right and among prosecutors supporting the "Car Wash" probe, which has revealed systemic, high-level embezzlement and bribery throughout Brazilian business and politics over the last four years.

"Lula is one of us. He knows what it is like to possess a challenging life and likes that the more compared to the loaded", explained dos Santos.

"What Lula is doing is a political move - what he wants from this scene is to be seen as beloved, a hero of the population", said Daniel Falcao, a professor of electoral and constitutional law at the University of Sao Paulo. One heckler was punched in the face and subsequently got hit by a passing vehicle as he was falling.

Workers' Party leaders insist that da Silva, " 72, would still function as the party's candidate in October.

Minutes before the deadline, his lawyers lost a bid to keep him out of jail while he appeals against his conviction. Technically, just starting to function his own sentence wouldn't maintain da Silva off the ballot.

The court's decision was met by protests both in for and against Lula, representing a deep divide within the country.

Lula da Silva, who governed Brazil from 2003 to 2011, had been considered a frontrunner in elections due in October. He would spend more than a month in jail.

Da Silva is the latest of many high-profile people to be ensnared in possibly the largest corruption scandal in Latin American history.

Parana is where Moro has been leading Brazil's wide-reaching investigation into corruption involving state oil giant Petrobras. Lula da Silva was initially found guilty of the charges in July 2017. The former president denies any wrongdoing in this case or in a lot of other corruption circumstances that have to be tried.

His original nine-year-plus sentence was extended to 12 years by an appeals court in January.
