Apple's Tim Cook 'wouldn't be in same situation' as Zuckerberg's Facebook scandal

It was given the information by an academic, who violated Facebook policies by sharing it.

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently came out against Facebook's data privacy standards in several interviews - while the CEO generally prefer companies to regulate themselves as far as data privacy goes, he feels the window for Facebook to do so has long since closed.

The incident has sparked criticism over Facebook's data practices.

"It doesn't mean that you can't use an iPhone to go to your browser and go to some porno site, if you want to do that", he said, prompting host Kara Swisher to interject with, "Nobody does that!" to both Cook and the audience's laughter. "I wouldn't be in this situation", he said.

Apple CEO Tim Cook believes it is too late for social platforms like Facebook to avoid regulation.

You're the product." Zuckerburg had mocked Cook's ridiculous concept by saying, " What, you think because you're paying Apple that you're somehow in alignment with them? "This is like freedom of speech and freedom of the press", Cook said. And in 2015, he warned consumers that Facebook and Google "gobbling up everything they can learn about you and trying to monetize it".

"We could make a ton of money if we monetised our customers, if customers were our product". "We've elected not to do that ..." "I wouldn't be in this situation", he replied, hinting that Zuckerberg had made mistakes. Now he has to deal with a #DeleteFacebook campaign that is trending, and is expected to testify before Congress on how something like this could happen in the first place. I think, in general, technology is an increasingly important trend in the world. Facebook has been caught in a medial maelstrom over its lax approach to data sharing; specifically over the Cambridge Analytica issue, through which it was recently revealed that Facebook users' data was being used by the firm with the intent to influence the 2016 U.S. election. Instead, it monetises its user base through things like Apple Music subscriptions, in-app purchases, etc. He compared the App Store to "the corner store".

It must be noted that since MSNBC has released on scattered clips from the event, it's not clear in what context Cook is speaking.
