Washington state defies FCC to pass its own net neutrality law

Why Do Net Neutrality Supporters Oppose a Net Neutrality Bill

Net neutrality is a principle that says no Internet traffic should get special treatment, and Internet service providers can't block or degrade certain traffic because the website or service pumping it out isn't willing to pay up for prioritization.

Opposition to the FCC's repeal of net neutrality grew this week, as six more tech companies filed suit against it. Etsy, Kickstarter, Foursquare, Shutterstock, Automattic and Expa petitioned the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit as part of a group called the Coalition for Internet Openness.

Last month you might recall that the NRA gave FCC boss Ajit Pai the Charleton Heston Award for Courage for his decision to dismantle popular net neutrality rules. Those rules also prevented the internet service providers from obliging some apps and sites over others. Bird stated that, "As more of our economic opportunities such as education, health care, banking, job functions, media viewing and relationships thrive online, the more important it is to preserve consumer choice".

Plus: There are 25 states total planning similar legislation. It's likely ISPs will sue Washington state to find out if that works.

On February 22, a coalition of 23 state attorneys general challenged the FCC in the DC Circuit, alleging the new order violated USA federal law, including the Communications Act of 1934.

The decision in Washington means that internet service providers may have to have a different set of policies there compared to other states that they operate in.

Big telecom companies have said net neutrality rules could undermine investment in broadband and introduce uncertainty about what are acceptable business practices.

In a bipartisan effort, the state's legislators passed House Bill 2282. which was signed into law Monday by Gov. Jay Inslee. "We've led the world in commercial airlines, we've led the world in software, and today we're leading the world in net neutrality". A December 2017 report by the Congressional Research Service outlines the recent history of net neutrality in the FCC, Congress and the courts, and makes a key point: In an earlier online era, the most popular services were email and Web content, a relatively light load for networks.

The final draft of the rules takes place on April 23, which will be the day the repeal takes effect.
