U.S. aircraft carrier to make historic port call in Vietnam

US aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson to arrive in Vietnam for historic visit

"The message the USS Carl Vinson sends is that the U.S. will maintain its naval presence in the South China Sea and that Vietnam supports the presence of the U.S. Navy as long as it contributes to regional peace and stability", he wrote.

For the first time since the end of the Vietnam War more than four decades ago, a US Navy aircraft carrier has arrived in the country.

The nuclear-powered carrier will anchor off the port city of Danang, where U.S. combat troops first landed in the war, making this a highly symbolic location.

"It's a pretty big and historic step since a carrier has not been here for 40 years", said Rear Adm. John V. Fuller, the commander of the Carl Vinson strike group, whose father served in Vietnam.

The hospital ship USNS Mercy is slated to stop in Vietnam in the coming months as part of the annual Pacific Partnership exercise that focuses on humanitarian assistance and disaster-relief preparedness.

China lays claim to nearly the entire energy-rich and strategically-important South China Sea, but several other nations such as Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam have overlapping claims.

The nuclear-powered Vinson carries 5,500 crew and up to 90 aircraft.

In recent years, Vietnam has consistently been at the forefront of multilateral diplomatic efforts, particularly in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), to criticize China's massive reclamation activities across disputed land features in the South China Sea.

The ship, which is called the Carl Vinson, will dock off Danang, which is the main Vietnam port that has been the landing area for American ships for many years.

"The Philippines has just rolled over, China is continually militarizing and if the USA doesn't maintain a presence in the region, Vietnam's got nowhere to hide", Thayer said.

This drives Vietnam to cooperate more closely with the US and Japan as it seeks diplomatic leverage against China. It far outstrips China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, in terms of fighting power and makes for a much more impressive show of force than other American naval vessels that have made port in Vietnam. Navy musicians from the USA 7th Fleet Band will also perform free concerts for the public. China has condemned the operations and has responded in the past by scrambling fighter jets to monitor the USA vessels.

Last year, Vietnam deployed six submarines purchased from Russian Federation to Cam Ranh Bay, but it can not oppose Beijing alone.

On Friday, a Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said that she hoped that the visit can "play a constructive role for the region instead of making the regional countries feel anxious".

China claims sovereignty over nearly all of the South China Sea, where more than $5 trillion of goods are shipped each year through some of the world's busiest waterways.
