Lawsuit: YouTube stopped hiring white and Asian males to improve corporate diversity

According to a lawsuit filed by former Google engineer Loretta Lee the tech giant’s ‘bro-culture’ lead to routine sexual harassment and lewd comments at work

As the The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, a lawsuit filed in January by former YouTube recruiter Arne Wilberg alleges that he was sacked for resisting what he calls illegal and discriminatory efforts to diversify Google's workforce. The former staffer said Google - YouTube's parent company - invoked "clear and irrefutable policies" meant to exclude white and Asian men in hopes of increasing the brand's diversity last spring.

According to claims made in a lawsuit filed by a former recruiter for Google's YouTube video site, the company instructed staff to stop hiring white and Asian men past year in an attempt to improve corporate diversity. Wilberg also alleged that late previous year, management deleted emails and other digital records of diversity requirements. Wilberg claims that he made multiple complaints to managers about YouTube's hiring process and escalated these complaints to superiors at Google before being fired last November.

A former employee is suing the company for allegedly discriminating against white and Asian male applicants as it tries to boost the number of black, Latino and female staffers. During that period, he claims the company put a freeze on hiring White and Asian men while also setting hiring quotas for so-called "diversity candidates". "How come he never surfaced to his management when he went weeks and months without seeing a person of color in an onsite interview?.Where was this desire for fairness when he would see salary offers to women engineers significantly less than comparably qualified men?" Miley did not respond to questions from WIRED, but in years past he has said that quotas do not create a level playing field. When Lee filed a complaint with the company's urging, she said that Google declined to investigate. The lawsuit, filed in January in California's San Mateo County Superior Court, claims Wilberg was sacked by Google in retaliation for complaining to human resources about the company's hiring practices, the news agency reported. This time, the plaintiff is a recruiter - someone who was actually responsible for carrying out Google's diversity initiatives, and who found them discriminatory. In a way, Google even popularized the idea of transparency around diversity numbers as a defensive tactic against claims about systemic inequality. While Damore fits those descriptions, the lawsuit was also filed on behalf of women and people of color who it's claimed Google mistreated on the basis of one or any combination of those categories. Managers then reportedly deleted all emails about diversity goals in an attempt to hide them from any further scrutiny.
