E-cigarettes expose teens to cancer-causing chemicals

Nearly 100 teens from the San Francisco Bay area were examined in the University of California-San Francisco study: 67 teens used e-cigarettes only, 16 used both e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes and 20 didn't smoke or vape at all.

Those who used both types of cigarette had significantly higher levels of unsafe chemicals, including acrylonitrile, acrolein, propylene oxide, acrylamide and crotonaldehyde, the team reported.

The study, published the latest edition of the medical journal Pediatrics, found that levels of toxic organic compounds in tested teens were up to three times higher on average in the e-cigarette users compared with a non-smoking, non-vaping control group, UCSF said.

"Teenagers need to be warned that the vapor produced by e-cigarettes is not harmless water vapor, but actually contains some of the same toxic chemicals found in smoke from traditional cigarettes", Rubinstein said in a statement. The two types of cigarette utilize caused the nearness of considerably more elevated amounts of perilous chemicals in the clients' bodies, including acrylonitrile, acrolein, propylene oxide, acrylamide and crotonaldehyde, the group announced.

A research that has been done by the scientists at the University of California, San Francisco, has revealed that the regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes share the same chemicals that prone to cancer development.

Hess said there are countless other studies that prove vaping is 95 percent safer than smoking traditional cigarettes.

In 2016, more than two million U.S. middle and high school students used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days, including 4.3 percent of middle school students and 11.3 percent of high school students, compared with 3.2 percent of USA adults.

More and more teenagers have been trying e-cigarettes in recent years. "Messaging to teenagers should include warnings about the potential risk from toxic exposure to carcinogenic compounds generated by these products".

The same CDC report found that only 2.2 percent of middle-schoolers and eight percent of high-schoolers had smoked traditional cigarettes in the past 30 days. E-cigarettes are more an more used by teenagers because of the massive marketing campaigns that promote them as safe alternatives to classic smoking.

After the 2016 CDC report was released, the president of the American Academy of Pediatrics Dr Benard Dreyer called the increasing rates of e-cigarette use among youths a "major public health concern".

"Electronic cigarettes generate nicotine in the vapor".

Dr Rubinstein said: 'I do not think teens are aware of the risks.

Many studies support the theory that kids who vape are more likely to go on to use other tobacco products, but there hasn't been much hard evidence about how directly unsafe e-cigarettes are.

"The way they advertise them is they have different flavors and different flashy packages so they look more like candy", Meza said.
