Blast in Kabul's Shia area kills at least seven; Daesh claims responsibility

Officials said the attack was intended to hit crowds gathered to commemorate a political leader

"The recent Taliban letter to the people of the United States, I believe, misses the point".

A suicide bomber exploded in the Afghan capital Kabul, killing at least seven people, Reuters reported.

Amin said the bomber detonated his explosive device at a checkpoint "after being identified by police".

Among the dead were two policemen, he said.

The group has not publicly responded to Ghani's invitation and previously said it would negotiate only with US officials.

Islamic State militants claimed responsibility.

In an Urdu-language statement issued on March 9, the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or Pakistani Taliban said Fazlullah's son - referred to as 16-year-old Abdullah - was among the 21 "holy warriors" killed by a suspected drone strike on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

Local Hazara leader Mohammad Mohaqiq told the Kabul gathering that the explosion was an attempt to terrorize Afghans.

Most Hazaras are Shiite Muslims, and Sunni militants consider all Shiites heretics and urge followers to kill them.

The death toll has risen to nine, Waheed Majroh, spokesman for the Health Ministry said. The insurgents launched a siege of an army outpost there, killing six soldiers and wounding five in a blistering, hourslong battle, Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said.

Members of the local police who were sent to assist the soldiers were ambushed by the Taliban while on their way to the outpost in the remote district of Khwaja Ghar.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, which happened near a high-profile gathering to mark the 23rd anniversary of the death of Abdul Ali Mazari - a prominent former leader of the mainly Shi'ite Hazara ethnic community who was killed by the Taliban in 1995.
