Williamson, Guptill scheme third straight loss for England

The runs have dried up for Kane Williamson in Twenty20 international cricket having scored 101 at an average of 14

New Zealand ended their three-match losing streak with a 12-run victory over England in a tri-nations Twenty20 cricket worldwide on Tuesday, inspired by an innings of 72 from captain Kane Williamson.

New Zealand recorded their first victory of the tri-nations Twenty20 global series on Tuesday as England lost by 12 runs in Wellington to remain winless.

Williamson shared an 82-run second wicket partnership with Martin Guptill (65) which laid the foundation for the innings and with his strike rate of 156.5 - 72 from 65 balls - put an end to rumblings that he might be out of place in the shortest format.

England's bowlers, especially Wood, were proving expensive, but spinner Adil Rashid took the wickets of Guptill and Colin de Grandhomme in successive deliveries to stem the flow of runs. After one miserly Munro over, Ish Sodhi removed Hales (47 off 24) with a short one then England were on the slide.

New Zealand have also lost once in the series to Australia, who have already qualified for the final in Auckland on February 21.

They finished on 184 for nine and will bow out of the series should New Zealand beat Australia on Friday or if they fail to defeat the Kiwis in Hamilton 48 hours later.

Disease and Wellington's unusually warm summer were blamed for the lengthy barren patch, and stand-in England captain Jos Buttler gladly offered it to his bowlers in the hope it would play tricks for the quicks.

The visitors had won the toss and put New Zealand in to bat, leaving the skipper satisfied at his team's efforts on what appeared to be a challenging surface.

Williamson top-scored with 72 from 46 balls and opener Martin Guptill contributed 65 as the Black Caps battled to a tight victory over England.

The fielding highlight for England was a spectacular leaping catch at long off from Chris Jordan to remove Colin de Grandhomme first ball.

However when a dawdling James Vince was run out by Williamson, it started a steady stream of wickets that stole England's momentum.

England captain Buttler said: "It was maybe ten to 15 runs too many. and we didn't bowl as well as we could have".

"They made us work really hard, we had to play very good cricket which we were fortunate enough to do today".

"You always want more runs, you always train hard, that's the focus", he said. We did not get the cameos in the middle either.

"That's what we need now, so we'll wait and see what happens", Buttler said. "Trent was outstanding at the death, but we knew it would be a challenge and the guys stepped up to the mark today".
