US President Donald Trump: Not Sure If Israel Wants Peace

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Abbas reportedly told Putin that he could no longer support the U.S.as a mediator because of the government's behavior under the Trump regime. Trump, in one of his tweets, also accused the Palestinians of not showing enough "appreciation or respect" to the USA after he had taken "the toughest part of the negotiation off the table".

According to WAFA, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi met with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Cairo on Monday, and told him the U.S. should "revive negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis".

"Right now, I would say the Palestinians are not looking to make peace, they are not looking to make peace", he told the Hayom, which is owned by American billionaire and Trump backer Sheldon Adelson. He declined to comment on a time frame to settle the boundary issue saying that both Israel and Palestine were not committed to peace. "Here we count on India, with its status as a great power, its historical role in the non-aligned movement and in global forums", Abbas said.

The White House said Trump repeated his belief that it is time to work toward a lasting peace agreement.

But, in an interview over the weekend with the Israeli daily newspaper Israel Hayom, Trump started to sound worryingly like his predecessor, Barack Obama. Since President Trump's Jerusalem announcement, we have met with leaders in countries that could help seek new peace - Russia, China, Japan, South Africa and India, alongside members of the European Union.

Last month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov remarked that the chances of Israel and Palestine resuming direct talks were "close to zero".

"The Palestinian side insists on forming a multilateral approach to overlook the peace process with the Israeli side" in an attempt to disregard the U.S. from its former role in the peace process, he said.

The December 6 White House declaration recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital outraged Ramallah and others across the Muslim world.

In addition to recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, U.S. administration has also cut funding to United Nations agency assisting Palestinian refugees and threatened to withhold money to Palestinians unless they resume negotiations with Israel.

'Russia is not helping us at all with North Korea, ' Trump said then.
