This is why everyone's wearing red today… and why you should too

Winston-Salem Goes Red Breakfast Kicks-Off National Wear Red Day

Today is National Wear Red Day, a day to get educated and give back to help end heart disease and stroke.

Go Red For Women is a national campaign geared towards raising awareness about cardiovascular disease and save lives.

Not only does Wear Red Day raise awareness, but it also serves as a way to raise funds to support research, education, and community programs to benefit women who have been affected by heart disease. At least 55 percent of women don't know that heart disease is their number one killer.

Lifestyle choices such as smoking, poor diet, and excessive alcohol can increase chances of heart disease.

The Senate formally adopted a resolution that proclaims February 2018 as American Heart Month and February 2nd 2018 as "Go Red for Women Day". Go Red for Women serves as a way to educate women on the signs of heart disease and encourage them to take action.

You can also shop at Macy's and pick up a Red Dress pin.

If it seems like just about everyone is sporting something red today, don't worry, you're not going insane. In fact, today heart disease claims more lives than all forms of cancer combined. As you throw on your favorite ruby-colored clothing on your way out the door, make sure to snap a selfie and share your red-hot look on social media using the hashtag #WearRedandGive.
