Oxfam scandal widens as other abuse cases revealed

The British government, meanwhile, has threatened to cut off funding to Oxfam, or any other aid organization that doesn't cooperate with the government's new effort to crack down on such abuses, according Mordaunt, who expects to meet with Oxfam officials on Monday.

Britain has warned Oxfam that it may lose government funding if the anti-poverty charity doesn't hand over all the information it has about a sexual misconduct scandal in Haiti by some of its aid workers.

In a further warning to the charity, she said: 'If they do not hand over all the information that they have from their investigation and subsequently to the relevant authorities, including the Charity Commission and prosecuting authorities, then I can not work with them any more as an aid delivery partner'. In a sign of widening fallout, the Sunday Times reported more than 120 workers for Britain's leading charities were accused of sexual abuse in the past year.

Ms Mordaunt's announcement comes as the Observer reports that Oxfam workers allegedly used prostitutes in Chad in 2006.

The former International Development secretary Priti Patel told the BBC: 'There are no databases of these predatory paedophiles that exist and we need them ... to stop this disgusting and corrosive culture of the revolving door in aid agencies'.

Mordaunt says there was a failure of "moral leadership" at Oxfam.

Ms Mordaunt announced she would meet the charity on Monday to discuss the case, and said: "If the moral leadership at the top of the organisation is not there then we can not have you as a partner".

"As a direct result of the stories in The Times, staff members have come forward with concerns about how staff were recruited and vetted in this case", said Caroline Thomson, chair of trustees for Oxfam GB.

"We want to see Oxfam provide all the evidence they hold of the events to the Charity Commission for a full and urgent investigation of these very serious allegations".

Its own investigation into the allegations led to four people being sacked and three others resigning - among them its country director for Haiti, Roland van Hauwermeiren.

Mark Goldring said the UK-based charity was ashamed of what it had got wrong but had taken action and been proactive about going public on the matter.

She added that sexual abuse in the charity sector as "utterly despicable", and vowed to meet the charity commission to discus what more could be done to fight it.

"Moreover we received positive references from former Oxfam staff-in their individual capacities-who worked with him", including from a human resources staffer, a spokesman said.

Oxfam has denied allegations that it tried to hide that some of its staff paid prostitutes in the aftermath of the quake.

However, he said a report released by the charity did not give details of the allegations.
