Minnie Driver quits Oxfam role over charity sex scandal

Oxfam Charity Faced with Sex Scandal and Fund Cutting Threats

Penny Mordaunt has warned Oxfam again its government funding could be at risk over the Haiti sex scandal as she revealed an upcoming meeting with National Crime Agency chiefs.

During her time as an Oxfam ambassador, Driver travelled to countries including Cambodia and Thailand to highlight the charity's work and has also performed at a fundraising concert.

The British actress said she had supported Oxfam for 20 years, adding: "I certainly will not let the abhorrent mistakes of a troubling organisation stop me or anyone else from working with good people in this space to support a population of human beings around the world that needs our help".

Oxfam has seen a sharp rise in the number of sex abuse allegations made in the wake of the damning Haiti natural disaster scandal of 2011, after the charity strengthened reporting procedures.

"Four members of staff were dismissed as a result of the investigation and three, including the country director, resigned before the end of the investigation".

The investigation was launched a day after Oxfam Great Britain's deputy chief executive resigned and apologised to the government and donors.

Priti Patel, an aid critic despite being Mordaunt's predecessor as global development minister, said the Haiti incidents were just "the tip of the iceberg" and there was a "culture of denial" in the sector.

"We regret that we did not act on Helen's concerns much quicker and with more resources", the statement said, adding it was now expanding the safeguarding team.

"From that conversation I had with Oxfam Quebec and Oxfam Canada on their procedures or their processes, I was very satisfied with what I heard", Ms. Bibeau said an interview Tuesday.

Like OXFAM, many other NGOs, operating under the banner of humanitarian assistance, were involved in scandals that have nothing to do with the humanitarian cause they claim to support.

Oxfam has faced severe criticism for a lack of transparency over misconduct allegations against staff members accused of using prostitutes in Haiti following a devastating 2010 quake.

In the latest revelations, the Sunday Times reports more than 120 workers for Britain's leading charities were accused of sexual abuse in the past year, "fuelling fears paedophiles are targeting overseas aid organisations".

Oxfam is under threat of losing its British government funding over sexual misconduct accusations in Haiti and Chad.

She added new whistleblowing procedures were put in place and said Oxfam often worked in hard locations where "the rule of law isn't going on". The European Commission has also said it could cut off its funding for Oxfam which stands at around 68 million euros ($84 million) a year.

She told IRIN: 'He just goes around the system... from Liberia to Chad, to Haiti to Bangladesh.
