Manhattan Bomber Sentenced to Life in Prison for 2016 Blast Injuring 30

New Jersey man sentenced to life in prison for planting bombs including one that injured more than 30 people

Before lowering the boom Tuesday, Manhattan federal Judge Richard Berman said "it now appears, if you put two and two together", that Rahimi was spreading his hate during Friday afternoon prayer sessions that Berman let him attend during the trial.

Ahmad Khan Rahimi, an Afghan-born immigrant who worked quietly behind the counter of his family's fast-food restaurant before building and planting the bomb that exploded in Manhattan in 2016, was sentenced on Tuesday to two life terms in prison.

Rahimi used household goods to create a bomb packed into a pressure cooker and wired to a flip-phone detonator, which he placed on the busy NY street on September 17, 2016.

Rahimi, a naturalised U.S. citizen who was born in Afghanistan and lived in New Jersey, was shot several times but survived. Hours later, in the Chelsea section of Manhattan at 23rd Street, another pressure-cooker bomb blew up inside of a Dumpster, blowing out windows of nearby buildings and projecting shrapnel hundreds of yards away.

"It's inexplicable that anyone would do that intentionally", he said.

The next day when returning to New Jersey Rahimi left a backpack containing six pipe bombs in a New Jersey train station and one exploded after being detonated by a police robot, but caused no injuries.

But, he added, "I have come to understand why there is such a big frustration between Muslims overseas and the American people".

Rahimi was awaiting sentencing last month in the Metropolitan Correctional Center when prosecutors claimed to have found evidence that he was trying to radicalize a fellow inmate with al-Qaida propaganda smuggled into the prison.

Berman approved restitution to victims at the sum of $562,803 as proposed by the government.

Ahmad Rahimi reads a statement to the judge during his sentencing hearing in NY on Tuesday.

"The Chelsea bombing was an attempt to bring our city to its knees. He failed", said New York Police Department Commissioner James O'Neill. "It is not." Rahimi was convicted on October 16, 2017, following a two-week jury trial before U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman, who also imposed today's sentence.
