Israel military trial of Palestinian teen opens

Army Abducts Sixteen Palestinians In The West Bank

"The Tamimi family stands up to Israel's brutality because they believe Palestinians, like ALL people, should be free".

Ahed Tamimi, who turned 17 in prison last month, appeared fresh and confident as she was led into a courtroom packed with journalists and foreign diplomats. He further reflected on his sister, who died after one of his remand hearings in the 1990s, "My sister died in one of these courts, we need the people and the media inside with us".

"Figures from Palestine show that Israel detains and prosecutes between 500 to 700 Palestinian children in military courts annually", Lynk noted.

Speaking to RT's "Going Underground" in January, Ahed's father, Bassem Tamimi, said: "I am a father".

Closed-door proceedings were held for a couple hours before adjourning.

Defense lawyer Gaby Lasky protested, saying the family wanted an open trial.

The hearing Tuesday lasted two hours and her next session will be March 11. None of the facts in this case seems to justify the arrest of Ahed Tamimi before the trial, particularly given the concerns of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, he added.

"Prisoners held on administrative detention in Zionist jails chose to boycott Israeli courts in a final and unprecedented manner... to protest this unjust policy", Issa Qaraqe told a press conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Such a contention seems irrelevant, even if correct, as Ahed's defiance was prompted by the shooting and wounding of her cousin a short time before, which was certainly not staged, but rather a reflection of oppressive and violent Israeli responses to Palestinian demonstrations of resistance.

Bassem Tamimi, Ahed's father said the attack took place during a stone-throwing protest. Tamimi and her mother, Nariman, were arrested a few days later. He has styled an image of Tamimi under the title 'There Is A Real Wonder Woman'.

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has criticised Israeli authorities" actions in the case, while the European Union has expressed concern over Israel "s detention of minors, including Ahed Tamimi.

"The Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Israel has ratified, clearly states that children are to be deprived of their liberty only as a last resort, and only for the shortest appropriate period of time", Michael Lynk, the United Nations special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967, said Tuesday after Ahed's first hearing in which the court chose to ban media from the trial.

On December 19, her home was raided by Israeli soldiers at night.

When Palestinians are noticed, as in this incident, it tends to be with derision, and expressions of a domineering Israeli political will that considers it entirely fitting to impose punishments on Palestinian children of a severity totally disproportionate to the gravity of the supposed crime.

There has been global outcry at a further delay in the military trial of Palestinian teenager Ahed Tamimi, who was arrested in December for kicking and slapping two Israeli soldiers.

It is not uncommon for Israelis - including soldiers - to accidentally enter Palestinian-controlled areas.

The teenager, just 16 at the time of the incident, was arrested in December after a video of her assaulting two soldiers outside of her home surfaced online and went viral.

The heavily armed soldiers do not respond to what appears to be an attempt to provoke rather than seriously harm them. They then move backwards after Nariman Tamimi becomes involved.

"Too many of our children quickly learn that they may be imprisoned or killed simply for who they are", read the petition that was published and shared with media Monday.

On Tuesday, the trial of 17-year old Palestinian Ahed Tamimi began.
