Drones grounded at opening ceremony, but not on tape delay

Record-breaking drone show lights up Winter Olympics opening ceremony

Each of Intel's foam and plastic drones is equipped with LED lights that can create more than 4 billion color combos. As the artists programmed different patterns and lights, the software showed exactly how that would look in the sky without a single drone taking off.

1,218 Intel Shooting Star drones made history for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 Opening Ceremony with the Winter Olympics' first-ever drone light show that also set a Guinness World Records title for the "most unmanned aerial vehicles airborne simultaneously".

Intel's drones can fly for around 20 minutes and of course, exterior factors, such as crosswinds and low temperatures can affect the overall flight time.

In fact, the tech giant launched 1,280 of its drones in December in Pyeongchang and pre-recorded the light show that aired on NBC's tape-delayed broadcast in the United States. However, the company is planning on doing smaller-scale, 300-drone shows during the medal ceremonies and it has tweaked the Shooting Star's design a little in order to accommodate South Korea's weather conditions. They weigh less than a pound.

"Since fireworks in the seventh or eighth century, there has been no alternative option", Anil Nanduri, the vice president and general manager of Intel's drone division, told AdWeek.

"Through this close collaboration with the Olympic family, we will accelerate the adoption of technology for the future of sports on the world's largest athletic stage". They followed up a show with 100 drones in Germany in 2015 with a performance featuring 500 of the bots the next year - obviously this tech is just getting smarter and smarter. It's now executed 160 shows - from Singapore's 2017 National Day Parade to the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas - in more than 10 countries. The drone performance hasn't aired yet in the USA because of time zone differences.
