Alberta to stop importing BC wine effective immediately

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer. iPolitics Matthew Usherwood

Horgan's assurance that there would be no beef ban has the B.C. cattle sector breathing easier. He maintains his focus right now is on this month's budget.

It's now up to the federal government to help get the project to the finish line by upholding its jurisdiction and taking any necessary actions with B.C., he said.

"When marijuana is legalized in Canada, and it's possible for people of Alberta to by British Columbia-produced marijuana, I'm pretty sure the calls for boycotts of each others' goods and services from the other provinces are going to be gone".

"I take that very seriously, and I will be resolute in protecting the interests of this great province".

"It's a ripple, it won't be really anything that we can't get around", he added. "When it comes to our rights, my rights as the premier to consult with British Columbians about putting in place protections for our environment and our economy, I see no ground for Premier [Notley] to stand on".

He said the boycott will potentially hurt relationships with wineries that have previously travelled to Edmonton for pop-up tastings - "that pipeline is shut off to us". There are issues. The pipeline, all of this, that need to be worked out, but (for) most of us in the industry, it's silly and it's childish.

Notley, in a video posted Wednesday, said the neighbouring province's effort to delay or block the project with reviews, consultations and studies is a constitutional violation that threatens Canada's social safety net, jobs and response to climate change. "I deliberately wasn't available to you yesterday because I don't think it's in anyone's interests to have duelling premiers".

Even Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola MP Dan Albas weighed in, releasing a Facebook video late Tuesday calling the moves by both Notley and B.C. Premier John Horgan "sabre-rattling electoral games". Enough what-ifs to make you wonder: if we're increasing the volume and frequency of transport of a risky hydrocarbon toxic to all life forms, therefore statistically increasing the probability of a serious spill, why wouldn't we know the answers beforehand?

Alberta's tar sands drive the majority of Canada's carbon emission growth, and generations of governments have knowingly compromised the climate in order to expand them.

Anderson says Kinder Morgan never anticipated getting caught in the middle of an inter-provincial battle like this.

Notley's trip to BC was an image rehab trip for her, not a pipeline sales pitch for the people of Alberta.

A recent decision by the Alberta government to ban the import of B.C. wine into the province has left a number of Alberta restaurants, retail shops and import agents disappointed.

"We do not believe this matter will be resolved by trade measures that will primarily impact consumers and private businesses".

The two other Western provinces expressed concern about the trade dispute between neighbours. Notley also suspended talks to buy B.C. electricity.

Trudeau refused to wade publicly into the dispute on February 7, saying talks continue behind closed doors with the provinces.

Horgan proposed to resolve the bitumen dispute in court - an interesting offer since B.C. has thumbed its nose at legal processes, particularly those that didn't end up in its favour, such as the approval of the Trans Mountain expansion by the National Energy Board and then by the federal cabinet. She has also threatened that after wine, Alberta may look to stop BC craft beer from heading east. Pressed as to what the prime minister might do next, the source cited Trudeau as saying last week that the dispute was still in the early stages.
