4 wounded in drive-by gun attack in Italy

Italy shooting

According to Macerata police, the shootings on Saturday morning were carried out in different parts of the town, including near the train station, leading to the injuries of six people, mostly African migrants.

A gunman has been arrested by Italian police two hours after a shooting rampage out of a vehicle while driving around the town of Macerata, injuring six people.

Italy's interior minister says the suspected gunman was immersed in "racial hatred" and had an extreme-right background with both neo-Nazi and neo-Fascist ties.

Italian police are also sure the attacks were "racially-motivated", while shots were also fired at a left-wing political party office.

The suspect also took part in regional elections for the anti-immigration Northern League previous year, BBC reported.

Mayor Romano Carancini told Sky TG24 that the victims were five men and one woman.

The attacks come days after a Nigerian migrant was arrested over the death of an 18-year-old Italian woman, whose body was found dismembered in the city.

According to police, the shooter drove around Macerata, which is famed for its outdoor opera festivals, in a black Alfa Romeo auto firing out of his window at migrants in various locations.

Local news outlets said the man was detained after he stepped out of his black Alfa Romeo 147 near the memorial, gave a fascist salute and shouted, "Italy for the Italians".

During the drive-by shooting, at lest four people were injured and all the victims are people from Africa, according to local media. Police are holding a Nigerian man custody over the killing.

Authorities had warned citizens to stay inside Saturday while the shooter remained at large.

Witnesses said they had earlier seen Oseghale with the suitcases in which the body was found.

A man has reportedly been arrested by police.

Police tried to limit the casualties by halting Macerata's public transit system and ordering city residents to stay indoors. More than 620,000 migrants, many of them African, have arrived in Italy since the beginning of 2014, contributing to a growing sense among Italians that the country was taking in far more people than it could handle.
