Would Raiders hiring Jon Gruden be Art Shell 2.0 for franchise?

Rich Gannon could join Jon Gruden with the Oakland Raiders

ESPN cited sources Saturday evening when reporting Gruden, a former Raiders coach who now works as an ESPN analyst, will be tempted to accept a strong offer to coach the Raiders. If it appears to be a done deal, there's a chance that any potential minority candidates would decline to sit for the job.

Now in the market for a new head coach, the Raiders figure to be focused on finding a boss who can maximize the deep pool of talent they've collected on that side of the ball over the past few years.

Gruden led the Bucs to the 2002 Super Bowl, defeating the Raiders a season after he was traded from Oakland to Tampa Bay following the Bucs' decision to fire Tony Dungy.

Now, Jack Del Rio is still the Raiders' head coach, and was signed to a contract extension in February after leading the Raiders to a 12-4 record in 2016. The franchise has held off endorsing Del Rio as its coach next season until they know about Gruden's plans. And if Gruden does return to Oakland, he may be bringing another familiar face with him.

When asked, Gruden would not comment specifically about the Oakland Raiders, saying he would rather not speculate because there is not any news at this time to report. The season ended, however, with Gruden exploiting Gannon's weaknesses and blowing out the Raiders. This is as hot as the talks have been, but as each year passes it becomes less and less likely that a Gruden return to the National Football League will be anything other than a disappointing dose of nostalgia.

The Raiders are planning to aggressively pursue Jon Gruden in an effort to bring him back as their head coach, according to Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN. Guys want to bounce ideas off me.

So, it's natural to remain skeptical about Gruden leaving ESPN, but this Raiders rumor is certainly an interesting one.

The Raiders went 25-23 during Del Rio's three-year stint, a roller coaster of a tenure in which Oakland shed its also-ran status for 15 fleeting weeks before sinking back to the deep end of the AFC.

Jack Del Rio broke the news following a 30-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday in Carson. Sure that's not bad, but it seems odd that any team would go to these lengths to bring him back now.

The reasons for the Buccaneers deciding to keep coach Dirk Koetter possibly are becoming clearer.
