Thousands women protest across U.S. against Trump

Women's March NYC

In Washington, where one year ago hundreds of thousands of women clad in pink hats took to the streets and vowed to resist Trump's presidency, Heather Tucci said she didn't want to stay on the sidelines. The marches were inspired by the Women's March in Washington DC that took place a year ago.

Tens of thousands of people hit the streets Saturday for the Women's March on New York City.

A number of protests, marches and events are being throughout Portland Saturday to mark the first anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration.

"Get out there now to celebrate the historic milestones and unprecedented economic success and wealth creation that has taken place over the last 12 months", the Republican wrote.

Women's March Inc., which organized the protest in Washington in 2017, has spent much of the a year ago creating more social justice protests, the paper said.

The latest demonstration comes at a time of reckoning for many powerful men in Hollywood, and other industries, for their treatment of women courtesy of the Me Too movement.

Kathleen Whitehead and her 13-year-old daughter, Casey Feldman arrived early to the Los Angeles women's march.

The protests this year go beyond just fighting for women's rights in general, though that is still a primary focus.

The strapline for Las Vegas is "Power to the Polls", created to drive national voter registration and maximize women's involvement in the 2018 midterm elections, in which a record number of women are standing for election. "You know, so everyone who was out in the airports rallying previous year and marching in the streets, many of them are now sitting in state legislatures across the country".

"We march, we run, we vote, we win", Pelosi said to applause. According to local press reports, protest organizers said they hope to build on efforts that have also brought feminist issues to the forefront during the politically hectic year since Trump rose to power. "Fighting for women's power to the polls to make a difference".

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), who spoke at the D.C. rally Saturday, said that the second year of marches showed "our grassroots energy is growing, not fading".

Thousands of Sydneysiders headed to the rally at Hyde Park sporting T-shirts saying "We can Do it" and waving placards with slogans of "unbroken" and "If you're not angry you're not paying attention".

In San Francisco, where 100,000 people were expected, acting Mayor London Breed greeted marchers.

People walk down Sixth Avenue as they participate in the Women's March in New York City.

Las Vegas - which, in October, was the scene of the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history - has been rocked by sexual assault allegations against elected officials and is considered a battleground state that will shape the US Senate in 2018.
