Svitolina into 4th round, ends 15-year-old Kostyuk's run

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Australian Open

"She's a great player, but I learnt that I can play against everyone".

"She's a great fighter, she fought right until the end and has a great future".

Kostyuk had been labelled the "future of tennis" by some observers after becoming the youngest Australian Open second- round victor since "Swiss Miss" Martina Hingis in 1996.

Latvian Ostapenko produced her usual brand of gung-ho tennis but Estonian Kontaveit weathered the storm to take her place in the fourth round in Melbourne for the first time.

In what was the longest game of the encounter, the 15-year-old record breaker put up a tough fight and fended off two break points before crumbling on the third as Svitolina was finally able to convert her chances and breakthrough with a strong return. Svitolina has now secured her best result ever at the Australian Open, reaching the last 16 for the first time.

The step up to facing a top 10 player was too much for Kostyuk on Friday. "I think this limit should be a little bit lower". "I always love coming to the Australian Open, but I never went further than the third round", she added.

The 23-year-old was less certain that Kostyuk got value for money in her "lesson". "I got it for free", she told reporters. The young Ukranian - the first player born in 2002 to play in a Grand Slam main draw - went down 2-6, 2-6 on a blistering afternoon, punctuating the 59-minute third-round meeting with her ninth double fault of the match.

Svitolina will play world number 130 Denisa Allertova in round four.

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki overcame a late temper tantrum to forge into the fourth round of the Australian Open with a 6-4 6-3 win over Kiki Bertens on Friday.

Petra Martic celebrated her 27th birthday with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win over Luksika Kumkhum to advance to the fourth round at Melbourne Park.

No.19 seed Magdalena Rybarikova from Slovakia outlasted Ukrainian veteran Kateryna Bondarenko 7-5 3-6 6-1 and will face either world No.2 Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark or Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens.

"Other than that, you need to be mentally tough and ready to just suffer out there".
