Pope Francis performs papal marriage ceremony aboard flight in Chile

As per Several media reports stated that Paula Podest Ruiz, 39, and Carlos Ciuffardi Elorriga, 41, who had a civil union eight years ago, told the pope a religious ceremony that was to tag on was called off after their parish church in Santiago was heavily damaged in an quake in 2010.

They'd been unable to follow it with a church wedding, but had been unable to because it had been destroyed by an earthquakr.

Ciuffardi told journalists aboard the flight that, after he explained their story, he asked the pope for their blessing.

Mr Ciuffardi said during conversation with the Pope he mentioned they were not married in a church and the pope generously offered to help bless their marriage. He liked us and he asked, 'Do you want me to marry you?' " Carlos went on gushing, "He told me it's historic, that there has never before been a pope who married someone aboard a plane". They responded, "Okay!"According to the couple, Pope Francis blessed their rings and then said "we need a witness".

Quick marriages in non-traditional settings may be de regueur in Las Vegas, but the Catholic Church usually prefers couples to be married in a church, preferably after a six-month Pre-Cana course.

A stunned Podest was almost speechless during the remaining hour on the flight as she recounted the story to the 70 or so journalists who travel with the pope on his foreign trips.

LATAM chairman Don Ignacio Cueto was called as a witness. Pope asked his cardinals to draft an improvised marriage certificate which was signed by him, the couple, and the witness.

A Vatican official hastily drew up an official, albeit handwritten marriage certificate, stating that the two had consented to the sacrament of marriage on January 18 and that Francis had celebrated the marriage "aboard the papal plane from Santiago to Iquique".
