Iran warns protesters will 'pay the price'

FLASHBACK Trump Tells UN that 'Iran’s People are What their Leaders Fear the Most'

Protests and criticism, not involving violence, are the constitutional rights of the Iranians, the country's President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday.

Protesters "must certainly know that improper behavior will be to their detriment, and the nation will come out and stand against these actions and throw a hard punch in their faces", the Revolutionary Guard's commander for security in Tehran, Brigadier General Esmail Kowsari, said according to a statement carried by the semi-official Iranian Students' News Agency late Saturday.

Trump responded to the protests with a tweet saying, "Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime's corruption & its squandering of the nation's wealth to fund terrorism overseas".

On Saturday, Telegram shut down one channel of the service over Iranian government allegations that it encouraged violence, something its moderator denied.

There have been clashes in several cities, and Iran has restricted social networks used to organise protests.

At first, they were protesting against Iran's dire economic downturn and the skyrocketing prices of basic necessities like eggs and poultry.

The protests began in Mashhad against high living costs and the struggling economy before spreading quickly to other areas and turning against the Islamic regime as a whole.

It also apparently forced state television to break its silence about the unrest, acknowledging Saturday that it hadn't reported on the protests on orders from security officials.

Iran warned on Sunday that protesters will "pay the price" after a third night of unrest saw mass demonstrations across the country in which dozens were arrested and official buildings attacked.

Earlier on Sunday, authorities of the country's western Lorestan province confirmed that two people had died during the protests in the province.

As things gained steam, however, the demonstrations took on a more political edge, with activists slamming the Iranian government for alleged corruption and calling on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to step down.

At least 30 people were killed and thousands arrested in the wave of protests, which drew the largest crowds in Iran since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

"No shots were fired by the police and security forces".

Since the 2009 protests against a disputed presidential election that gave hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a second term were ruthlessly put down, many middle-class Iranians have abandoned hope of securing change from the streets. "The people are finally getting wise as to how their money and wealth is being stolen and squandered on terrorism. Looks like they will not take it any longer", Trump wrote.

In his first public comments, Mr Rouhani criticised Mr Trump. And he adds: "The USA is watching very closely for human rights violations!"
