Great changes of Facebook and the newsfeed of users

News Feed FYI: Bringing People Closer Together | Facebook Newsroom

The co-founder of the world's largest social-media business saw his fortune fall US$3.3 billion (NZD$4.5b) on Saturday (NZ time) after he posted plans to shift users' news feeds toward content from family and friends at the expense of material from media outlets and businesses.

Adam Mosseri, whose title is head of News Feed, said in a blog post, "We will predict which posts you might want to interact with your friends about, and show these posts higher in the feed. On January 11, the social media giant announced that it would change the algorithm of its news feed so that it would "prioritize what [users"] friends and family share and comment on", according to The New York Times.

"But recently we've gotten feedback that public content - posts from businesses, brands and media - is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other".

Instead of a feed full of updates from media companies (or that clothing store you followed for a discount one time), the future news feed should be full of content you find engaging.

These include an anonymous sperm donor seeing his daughter as a possible "friend" on Facebook, and patients in the same psychiatric office seeing others suggested as "people they may know".

Facebook for addressing the issue has brought in many changes.

"We feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren't just fun to use, but also good for people's wellbeing", Zuckerberg said in a post on his Facebook page.

Zuckerberg expects the time people spend on Facebook will go down.

"We believe these changes will be beneficial to Facebook in the medium and long term".

Facebook has always been criticized for creating "filter bubbles", the echo chambers of friends and like-minded people whose views are reinforced by their friends' posts on the platform. Zuckerberg recognised that videos and other public content have "exploded' on the social media site in the past years".

Google, Twitter and Facebook have come under fire for allowing the spread of bogus news. You can also get notifications from Facebook when we post something, and you can find instruction on how to do that here.

Facebook's artificial intelligence is certainly good enough to identify infant images, and let people choose to see fewer of them-or, if they wish, even more of them.

"This will be one of the more important updates that we have made".

Other publishers like Bloomberg have chose to get ahead of the algorithm change and create community-driven Facebook groups around certain topics where they can promote their stories and drive traffic back to their sites, according to Digiday.

Facebook says it will surface posts from friends more prominently in the News Feed than those from brands and publishers.

"The most hard thing about this", Chavern said, "is that it will impact some publishers more than others, but it really emphasizes that all are subject to these Facebook rules and they can change whenever without much rationale and without much consultation".

As we roll this out, you'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media.
