Canada PM Justin Trudeau condemns attack on Muslim girl in Toronto

Possible hoax alert: Canadian schoolgirl claims man tried to 'cut off her hijab'

An 11-year-old girl was assaulted in Toronto on Friday by a man who twice tried to cut off her hijab with scissors and then fled, police said.

"I felt really scared and confused because I didn't feel comfortable that people are doing this.", the girl was quoted by media.

Toronto police say they are searching for a man who allegedly cut parts of a girl's hijab while she was walking to school.

The girl was reportedly on her way to school when the man came up to her and used scissors to cut off her hijab. After she screamed, the man ran away, but returned minutes later to "continue cutting [her] hijab again".

When her attacker pulled her hood down, she said he cut her hijab from the bottom up.

Norm Kelly, the area's city councillor, responded to the incident by saying there was "no place in Canadian society for hate crime - whether large or small", adding, "I'll be asking my followers to send any tips they may have to police".

Officers describe the suspect as an Asian man in his 20s with a medium build.

"I saw my sister and she was frightened and I was more frightened because I didn't know if she was injured or if he was going to hurt her", Mohammad Zakariya said.

Toronto police lauded Khawlah's quick thinking and response to the attack, with Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu saying she was "very, very smart" for shouting and joining the group of students ahead of her. Sidhu said this is "an isolated incident", such that she has never seen in her 20 years of service.

"This is not who we are", she wrote on Twitter".

Afterwards she and her brother joined a group of other students also walking to school, for safety, before being separated from the group and each other at an intersection. "I'm so proud to be a Canadian, and I feel so safe in this community", Samad said. "We must stand firm in our support of this young girl who was assaulted simply for wearing a hijab".

"Everyone in our province has the right to worship and dress however they choose", she said. "I want her and her family and her friends and community that that is not what Canada is and that is not who Canadians are".

Speaking at his cabinet's retreat in London, Ont., Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the incident "troubling". There has been a surge in Islamophobic attacks in the country and mosques have been targeted.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne called the attack "a cowardly act of hatred".
