Apple Shuttles Being Attacked In Silicon Valley

Apple shuttle buses are being re-routed because several have been hit with unknown objects while driving on Interstate 280 in California recently. Above an image of an Apple commuter bus in 2014

In response, we've learned that Apple has rerouted the bus routes for employees living in San Francisco, adding 30-45 minutes of commute time each way, as the company works with authorities to see what exactly is going on.

Images sent to Mashable by an "internal source" show buses with shattered windows, caused by what some Apple employees believe were rubber bullets.

It's suspected that someone is shooting out the windows using pellet guns, or perhaps throwing rocks.

It is reported that the first incident occurred last week on Friday, when an Apple shuttle bus was traveling from the Cupertino, California headquarters to San Francisco.

Apple's decision to build a data center in Reno in 2012 kickstarted a wave of big-name tech projects coming to the Reno area, as well as a new approach to economic development.

Four of the buses were carrying workers for the tech giant Apple, while the fifth was carrying Google workers.

According to Mashable, Apple employees were informed about the route variation in an email on Tuesday night. At least four separate shuttles are said to have suffered broken windows while driving on 280.

Subject: Coaches temporarily being reroutedDue to recent incidents of broken windows along the commute route, specifically on highway 280, we're re-routing coaches for the time being.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Art Montiel told SFGate that the attacks took place while the buses were moving and occupied.

(NASDAQ:AAPL)'s charter buses are targeted as well. "We're working closely with law enforcement to investigate these incidents", the email said, according to Mashable.

While the exact method by which the buses are being attacked remains unclear, that fact that real damage has been done is not.

During 2013 and 2014 protests, demonstrators hurled rocks at the buses, slashed their tires and taped signs with profanity on them.

Interestingly, the buses involved in this latest incident don't include branding indicating they come from a major tech corporation.

Apple and Google did not respond to requests for comment.
