10% of Developers Plan to Introduce Loot Boxes in their Next Games

Switch Sees Positive Growth at GDC 2018

The sixth GDC State of the Industry Survey shows an increased interest from developers in making games for the Nintendo Switch.

Initially the survey showed that the number of developers working on Switch increased compared to past year, because in 2017 - before the launch of the console - 3% of respondents are working on it and 5% planned to publish their games on the hybrid system, but in 2018 12% of the respondents are working on the console and 15% have planned to launch their games on it. This puts it behind the PC (59%) and PlayStation (39%), but ahead of the Xbox One on 28%. In fact, the survey shows that games released on Switch tend to sell at least as well, if not better, than on other platforms.

What's more, of the developers who have already created Switch games most said that the Switch versions of their software have sold as well as or better on Switch than on other consoles.

The New Nintendo 3DS gets one additional game this week in Zig Zag Go for $1.49. Another said "VR adoption and uptake depends on finding that killer game that becomes a must have", suggesting that the headset-based hardware needs a game comparable to Halo or Minecraft to help it achieve mainstream adoption. Last year, 24% of respondents said they're working on a VR game, while this year that number has dwindled to 17%.

That's up from 3% in 2017 and there were even more positive results noted from among developers looking to the future. Specifically, loot boxes have unsurprisingly fallen out of favour, languishing at the bottom of the business model table with only 11 per cent of developers planning to use them in their next games.

22% and 21% of developers said that their games would include paid in-game items and currency respectively. Last year, prior to the device's launch, three per cent of respondents were working on a Switch game.

But it could also be news that more Nintendo Switch games projects are in development for 2018 by quite a margin.
