Yemen's Saleh killed in ambush

Yemen fighting will lead to 'more tragedy'

Houthi militants react as they ride on a truck after Yemen's former president Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed, in Sanaa, Yemen December 4, 2017. But, since they entered it, they seized arms stores, won loyalties and laid down their plans for the day in which they would fight Saleh and probably assassinate him and take over the capital. He dramatically changed the map of the war in Yemen the night he announced on TV that he accepted reconciliation, and assassinating him will not change this. 6 days of fighting have left more than 125 people dead in the capital, Sanaa. His death puts the exclamation point on the end of an era in Yemen that had, for all intents and purposes, already come to a close.

The 75-year-old had survived civil war, rebellion in the north, an Al-Qaeda insurgency in the south and a June 2011 bomb attack on his palace that wounded him badly.

The coalition accuses non-Arab Iran of trying to expand its influence into Arab countries, including Yemen, which shares a long border with Saudi Arabia, by aligning themselves with the Houthis and Saleh.

"We ask civilians to remain at least 500 metres (yards) away from Huthi military vehicles and gatherings", it said. Therefore, Houthis finally chose to kill him; not because he turned against them, but because he is capable of destroying their political project.Days ago, Saleh changed the map when he annulled his alliance with Houthis.

In a televised speech Monday, Houthi leader Abdel Malek al Houthi declared victory against Saleh.

"He was martyred in the defence of the republic", said Faiqa al-Sayyid, a GPC leader.

A senior official with Yemen's internationally-recognized government confirmed to The Associated Press that Saleh had been killed.

Firefighters hose a building in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the press.

Military and government sources said the army would advance on Sanaa from the east and northeast, with at least seven battalions ordered to move forward. He also called for the opening of the roads and crossings for relief boats to reach the city and for commercial traffic.

"The president will soon announce a general amnesty for all those who collaborated with the Huthis in recent months and who have retracted that allegiance", said Prime Minister Ahmad Obaid bin Daghr.

Unverified footage circulated showing his bloodied body, just days after he tore up his alliance with the Houthis following almost three years in which they had jointly battled the Saudi-led coalition.

That dealt a serious blow to his already fragile alliance with rebel chief Abdul Malik al-Huthi. "But this is far from over - Saleh was an icon in Yemen for millions, and so his death will not go slowly or unanswered".

The Yemeni war has already become one of the largest humanitarian catastrophes in the world, and the death of Saleh has the potential to make the conflict even worse.
