Starbucks is opening a store in China every 15 hours

An augmented reality app is used in the new Starbucks Roastery in Shanghai China

Three years after the company opened its first roastery on its home turf, Starbucks is testing the larger, upmarket store concept overseas for the first time in China, where it now has 3,000 sites.

Starbucks has opened a stunning location in China that is 300 times bigger than the average coffee shop.

Starbucks dominates in China and is growing fast in the market, while in the USA it comes under pressure from a "third wave" of boutique coffee sellers and cheaper rivals.

Twin to the Seattle-based inaugural small-lot Reserve cafe, the new restaurant boasts Starbucks' first augmented reality experience.

It will be the second of its kind worldwide, offering customers the chance to actually watch coffee beans being roasted live in-store.

Starbucks opened its first store in China in 1999 in Beijing.

The new Shanghai outpost is the chain's largest store yet with an on-site bakery, a 40-ton copper cask and an augmented-reality feature. Revenue from the Asia-Pacific region accounted for nearly 15 percent of Starbucks' revenue for the fiscal year ended in October.

Starbucks has more than 600 coffee shops in Shanghai, more than any other city in the world.

But the Shanghai roastery won't hold the title of largest Starbucks for too long.

There are plans for a fancy Starbucks roastery to open in NY next year, but the company says it won't be quite as large. The location has gourmet drinks - like nitrogen-infused teas - and an 88-foot-long, hand-crafted coffee bar.

The Roastery will also feature China's first Starbucks Teavana Bar, where customers can select a Teavana signature pure tea or blend, served either hot or iced. Last quarter, China posted an 8 percent increase, compared with a 3 percent gain in the USA, excluding impacts from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Starbucks expanded its investment in China in July, when it announced plans to buy out the partners in its East China joint venture. That's up from 5.5 percent five years earlier.
