Saudi-led coalition intensifies Yemen airstrikes as U.S. raises humanitarian concerns

В Йемене убили бывшего президента

Under persistent bombing and a military blockade by the coalition, thousands of civilians in the capital of Sanaa and other Houthi-controlled areas have been killed by airstrikes, starvation and disease.

Zeid said its creation "is an important step toward accountability and ending impunity for the serious violations of human rights committed by all sides in Yemen amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the country, and ensuring justice and remedy for the victims".

But that alliance unravelled over the past week, with dozens reported dead in heavy clashes as the former leader reached out to the Saudi-led coalition that has waged devastating air strikes against the Huthis since September 2015.

Yemen's war, pitting the Iran-allied Houthis who control Sanaa against a Saudi-led military alliance backing a government based in the south, has brought what the United Nations calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Yemen's minister of information called upon the Houthi armed group to release the journalists and urged global organisations to "leave the status of passive onlookers and take acts to press the militias to stop tormenting all the Yemeni journalists", Muammar Al- Eryani told Saba Net.

Fighting has intensified since former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, an erstwhile Houthi ally who had turned on the group, was killed in an attack on his convoy last week.

The Saudi-led coalition warned the city's residents to evacuate rebel-controlled areas, as global aid groups warned Monday they were losing the ability to reach civilians in Sanaa.

"They obviously care about USA support", Corker said.

He says that "at the same time, people are bracing themselves for more". He cited accounts of snipers firing upon ambulances, pregnant women with health issues not able to go to hospitals, and armored vehicles roaming the streets over the five-day span.

But with Saleh's forces seemingly in disarray, it was not immediately clear if the Saudi-led coalition would be able to turn the split to its advantage.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said Monday that at least 125 people had been killed and some 240 wounded in Sanaa since the fighting began last week. The ICRC didn't provide a toll from the near-daily airstrikes.

A video circulating online on Monday showed Saleh's body with a gaping head wound dumped in a pickup truck by rebels — a grisly end recalling that of longtime strongman Saleh's contemporary, Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, in 2011.

He called for his father's backers to "take back Yemen from the Iranian Houthi militias".

The war and blockade has plunged Yemen into a major humanitarian disaster, leaving 20 million people in need of aid.
