Russia Has Been Banned From Competing In The 2018 Winter Olympics

RUSADA remains non-compliant with the World Anti Doping Agency

The International Olympic Committee decided on Tuesday to ban Russia from the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Games, but to allow some Russian competitors still to take part as neutrals.

The IOC executive board made a decision to suspend the ROC with immediate effect.

Individual Russian sportspeople will still be allowed to compete as an "Olympic Athlete from Russia" in the cold-weather tournament, but they have to do so without their national flag or anthem.

Those athletes who do go to the Games, which start on February 9, will participate under the name "Olympic Athlete from Russian Federation".

If they win, the Olympic flag would be raised and the Olympic anthem played to honour their victories.

"It sounds like a really good compromise to me", said Stuart Benson, who raced on the British four-man bobsled team that placed fifth in Sochi, but which now hopes for the bronze medal after two Russian sleds were disqualified. The statement said that Schmidt's report had confirmed "the systemic manipulation of the anti-doping rules and system in Russian Federation".

At the State Kremlin Palace on December 1, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said at a joint news conference with Mutko that the IOC's decision would not affect the World Cup.

It was Rodchenkov who first revealed the scale of Russia's cheating and it was his testimony which formed the basis of the second of those WADA investigations, conducted by Canadian law professor Richard McLaren.

In an embarrassment for Russia's hosting of the 2018 World Cup, the International Olympic Committee also banned Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko from the Olympics for life.

The IOC suspended the Russian Olympic committee and IOC member Alexander Zhukov, and also banned Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vilaty Mutko from the Olympics for life.

The US Olympic Committee praised the IOC's announcement. "Working with the IOC Athletes' Commission, we will now look for opportunities to make up for the moments they have missed on the finish line or on the podium".

The Russian authorities have vehemently denied any state involvement in doping and pledged to work with worldwide sports bodies to curb the use of banned performance-enhancing drugs in the country.

Many athletes said they wouldn't have felt comfortable had the International Olympic Committee banned all Russians from the Pyeongchang Games.

The IOC also will bar Russian officials who were team leaders at Sochi, and coaches or medial staff who have been linked to doping athletes.

The IOC may partially or fully lift the suspension of the ROC from the commencement of the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 provided these decisions are fully respected and implemented by the ROC and by the invited athletes and officials.

WADA president Sir Craig Reedie commended the IOC's "informed decision" to sanction Russia and said the agency would be "eager to collaborate" in examining which Russians might be eligible to compete in South Korea. So far the figure stands at 25 athletes, with 11 medals stripped.

The IOC will issue operational guidelines for the implementation of these decisions.
