Facebook data requests shows 2.6% increase through June 2017

Facebook law enforcement takedowns quadrupled in six months because of a school shooting video

For India, the data released by Facebook showed that from January 2017-June 2017, there were a total of 9,853 requests and 13,752 user accounts requested. India, the UK, Germany and France were also among the most frequent requesters, with 12 per cent, nine per cent, seven per cent and six per cent, respectively.

"Fifty-seven percent of the information demands we got from law implementation in the USA contained a non-divulgence arrange that disallowed us from advising the client, up from 50 percent in our last report", Facebook Deputy General Counsel Chris Sonderby wrote in a blog entry. Fifty-seven percent of the data requests we received from law enforcement in the USA contained a non-disclosure order that prohibited us from notifying the user, up from 50% in our last report.

Facebook says that 57 percent of USA government requests for user data in the first half of 2017 came with a secrecy order prohibiting it from notifying affected users. H1 saw a huge leap in data restrictions, up to 28,036 from 6,944 in H2 2016, but most of this can be traced back to a single event, a school shooting in Mexico which resulting in Facebook restricting 20,506 pieces of content. It restricted access to three items of content in response to a court order related to defamation.

Facebook also received preservation requests, which ask that certain account records be saved, especially for matters of official criminal investigations for 90 days pending the receipt of the formal legal process. The percentage increased 21% globally, from 64,279 to 78,890. (FB) said that requests for user data from governments worldwide continued to increase. Facebook said 217,265 of substance in its informal community were expelled after it followed up on 81 percent of 14,279 claims in the principal half of the year. So, we scrutinize each request for legal sufficiency, no matter which country is making the request, and challenge those that are deficient or overly broad.

Facebook revealed that there were a total of 21 internet disruption requests throughout the first half of 2017 and in specific regions.

Please see the full report for more information.

Facebook's report includes requests for user data from Facebook, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram accounts. Around 70,000 requests for copyright were submitted to Instagram, with 685,000 posts removed.
