Amazon Australia goes live in time to ruin rivals' Christmas

Amazon Australia Is Officially Here (For Real This Time, No Jokes, OK?)

Amazon Prime hasn't launched as yet, though Amazon expects it to launch here in mid-2018, but they are offering 1-day shipping to selected areas across Australia.

It's not all doom and gloom, however, with many retailers - including eBay and Kogan.com - affirming that Amazon's entrance will ultimately be good for Australia's retail landscape, promoting innovation and growth.

Industry research firm IBISWorld even put a number to it, last month saying the U.S. retailer would undercut Australian rivals to the tune of 30%, while an Amazon staffer reportedly said the company was out to "destroy" the local retail scene.

Customer orders will be processed at Amazon's new fulfilment centre in Dandenong South.

For electronics, we saw a portable hard drive from WD on sale for $89 on Amazon, which again meets the $49 free delivery threshold.

Meanwhile, some items are actually cheaper to purchase on the Amazon US site and have shipped to Australia.

The move establishes the $550 billion behemoth as an aggressive presence in the sluggish Australian retail sector, just as shopkeepers were hoping for a rush of sales over the important Christmas holiday season. However, they need to react quickly.

"We never believed that Amazon will decimate retail".

Amazon will also feature big brands such as Puma, Lego, L'Oreal and Sonos.

Rocco Braeuniger, country manager for Amazon in Australia, said focusing on customers and the long-term are key principles in the company's approach to retailing.

The product range will be limited to mostly third-party sellers selling on Amazon Marketplace, though it is expected that some of Amazon's private label products will also be available.

"By concentrating on providing a great shopping experience and by constantly innovating on behalf of customers, we hope to earn the trust and the custom of Australian shoppers in the years to come", he said.

"Over time, we will create thousands of new jobs and invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Australia", said Braeuniger. Many products will ship out of a Melbourne-based warehouse the company began setting up months ago.
