UCLA basketball players could be stuck in China 'for months'

Brandon Ingram for the LA Lakers

The players were released on bail Wednesday, but ordered to stay at the hotel until their legal situation was resolved.

Earlier this week, LaVar told reporters that the situation "ain't that big a deal," but has been uncharacteristically quiet since.

Larry Scott, commissioner of the Pac-12 Conference in which UCLA play at collegiate level, issued a statement saying UCLA basketball players were "involved in a situation" in China, with police being summoned to the team's hotel to investigate the matter. The paper's Ken Sugiura is traveling with Georgia Tech, which plays UCLA in Shanghai on Friday. Asked later in the day whether he was anxious about his son, LaVar replied, according to ESPN: "He'll be fine, he'll be fine".

A UCLA spokesman did not confirm or deny the information, referring to the school's statement that it was cooperating with local authorities.

The players will also not be permitted to visit the country again.

Chinese foreign ministry officials previously said that the Chinese government had reported the incident to U.S. officials.

UCLA's freshman basketball players LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley are making headlines.

If tried and convicted, LiAngleo Ball and his teammates could face between three and 10 years in prison. "Whether in the United States or overseas, we expect our student-athletes to uphold the highest standards".

The players will not play in Saturday's game against Georgia Tech.

A US State Department official said the department was aware of reports that three American citizens were arrested in China and stood ready to provide assistance, but had no further comment due to privacy concerns. A former college basketball player who has been training his sons since they were kids, LaVar Ball said he could beat Michael Jordan one-on-one and that Lonzo, while still in college, was better than two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry. Its first sneaker, the ZO2, raised eyebrows when it was priced at $495.
