Did Sessions mislead Congress about his interactions with Russian Federation?

Mueller Revelations Put Sessions in Awkward Political Position

A former Trump campaign adviser says Donald Trump listened to George Papadopoulos when he presented the idea of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

It's possible Papadopoulos may have been at Trump events that Sessions also attended, including a dinner at the Capitol Hill Club with some members of the foreign policy committee during the summer of 2016, the person said. Jeff Sessions and "a few people" on the Trump campaign. Page's account directly contradicted the under oath account from Sessions, who denied knowledge of such a trip while testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee. The new information is renewing attention to how forthcoming Sessions has been with Congress.

Lindsey Graham during an October 18 Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearing.

Sessions is also under pressure from his boss, who has made clear he thinks the Department of Justice should look into his former presidential rival, Hillary Clinton, and her campaign's behavior with the Democratic National Committee during the presidential primary race. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., told The Chicago Tribune. Page's Thursday testimony (disclosed to CNN by Texas Republican Rep. Mike Conaway) indicates that Sessions knew about Page's trips to Russian Federation. Papadopoulos proposed meeting with Putin and Trump. Near the end of the dinner, Page approached Sessions to say hello and thanked the then-senator for the dinner, and Page also mentioned he was headed to Russian Federation.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley said Thursday he was still learning all the details about the Papadopoulos matter.

The Justice Department did not comment. "He said Sessions did not react or comment one way or the other", Conaway told CNN.

According to court documents released Monday, Papadopoulos said he was in a meeting with Trump and other advisers, including then-Sen. His reaction was confirmed with another source who had discussed Sessions' role.

Sessions, now attorney general, has testified to Congress that he didn't know about of any people on the Trump campaign having contacts with Russians. He later acknowledged that he met then-Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak twice during the campaign.

The New York Times, citing an anonymous campaign aide who attended the meeting, said Trump "listened with interest" to Papadopoulos' pitch and asked several questions.

The White House has moved to distance itself from Papadopoulos.

"Ultimately, whether or not he committed perjury, will be again, I believe, Bob Mueller's call", Franken said.

Papadopoulos emailed a person described as a "senior policy adviser" on the campaign to tell them of "messages coming in from Moscow".

Nonetheless, the court filing on Papadopoulos is now being contrasted with long-disputed answers Sessions gave the Senate Judiciary Committee at his confirmation hearing about Trump's campaign, including the exchange with Franken.

At the Senate judiciary hearing last month, Sen.

During his confirmation hearing in January, Sessions told Sen. "Sessions needs to be more forthright to our committee and clarify the record and I intend to write to him about it".

A Justice spokesperson declined to comment.
