5 takeaways from Black Friday weekend

Black Friday footfall

More than 174 million Americans shopped in stores and online during the holiday weekend, topping a prior forecast calling for 164 million, the National Retail Federation revealed Tuesday. The group finds those who shopped online and in stores spent or were planning to spend $82 more on average than online-only shoppers, and $49 more on average than store-only shoppers.

- Shoppers are opening their wallets: Total holiday spending is expected to climb about 4 percent this year - in line with 2016's gain - but holiday cheer has infected some consumers with a vengeance.

The online sales on Black Friday and Thanksgiving rose to 7.9 billion dollars, a record high, and up 17.9 percent from a year ago, said Adobe Analytics in a latest report, which covers transactions at the largest 100 US online retailers. US retailers collected in a record $7.9 billion in only online sales on Black Friday and Thanksgiving, up 17.9 percent from previous year, according to Adobe Analytics, which measures transactions at the most significant 100 USA web retailers, on Saturday.

- But much of that money is headed online: E-commerce sales are up about 17 percent this season, according to Adobe Systems. And Shay noted that with 24 of the top 25 e-commerce retailers hailing from the brick-and-mortar world, traditional retailers are growing their share. By way of comparison, Adobe notes that transactions on Black Friday and Thanksgiving accounted for $5.03 billion and $2.87 billion in revenue, respectively. The biggest spenders were older Millennials (25-34 years old) at $419.52. As a quick example, Apple over the course of Black Friday weekend reportedly sold 6 million iPhone X units, with most of those purchases being for the pricier - and more margin-friendly - 256GB model. More than 81 million shopped online on Cyber Monday. "At the end of the day, a sale is a sale is a sale, whether it happens in-store or online", he said. The survey found that more than 64 million shopped both online or in stores. The volume, a single-day record, was 9 per cent over the previous high, set on Black Friday a year ago, according to USA Today, which first reported the gun sales.

The annual dip of 3.6% is a clear reaction to the impact of retailers spreading out offers over the week leading up to Black Friday, when footfall rose by 1.3% annually.

Black Friday store traffic was more resilient than many expected, he said.

That's why while online sales are cutting into brick-and-mortar retailers' profits, those companies have to go online or face losing market share, said Gerald Storch, chief executive of Storch Advisors. NRF also reports that retail-tainment was also a big trend this year, with many local businesses and downtown areas around the country taking advantage of the trend by hosting Small Business Saturday events to encourage consumers to get out with their families.

Top shopping destinations included department stores (43 percent), online retailers (42 percent), electronic stores (32 percent), clothing and accessories stores (31 percent) and discount stores (also 31 percent).
