US Supercarrier Patrols Near North Korea to Deter Military Moves by Pyongyang

North Korea nuclear war

The Reagan's presence in the region, coupled with recent military pressure by Washington on Pyongyang, including B1-B strategic bomber flights over the Korean peninsula, comes ahead of President Donald Trump's first official visit to Asia, set to start in Japan on November 5, with South Korea to follow. "We have made it clear with this exercise, and many others, that we are ready to defend [South Korea]".

"The US is running amok by introducing under our nose the targets we have set as primary ones", North Korea's state news agency said in a statement.

"There is no need for us to be bellicose and aggressive (over North Korea)", said Clinton at a forum in the South Korean capital Seoul, stressing the need for greater pressure on North Korea and diplomacy to bring Pyongyang to talks.

According to a new NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll published Thursday, a majority of Americans (54 per cent) - Republicans and Democrats - view North Korea as the most immediate threat to the country. China has condemned the exercises in the past, calling the USA and North Korea in March "two accelerating trains coming toward each other".

The exercises are the latest instance of United States military hardware movements around the Korean peninsula.

The latest threat on Thursday came amid massive joint US-South Korean naval exercises off the peninsula involving the American aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.

North Korea has blasted the joint drills as a "rehearsal for war".

Other statements released by North Korea over the last day include: "The rabid man in the White House ... will first face the enormous volley of nuclear fire if he hopes to settle (this) confrontation with nukes". The most stringent include a ban on coal, iron ore and seafood exports that aim at halting a third of North Korea's $3 billion of annual exports.

On Monday, Kim In Ryong, North Korea's deputy U.N. envoy, told a U.N. General Assembly committee the Korean peninsula situation had reached a touch-and-go point and a nuclear war could break out at any moment.

The UN Security Council has unanimously ratcheted up sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. "They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen".

The military exercises run through October 26. and come as President Trump has threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if the reclusive state resorts to using weapons against the USA or its allies.

With Pyongyang and Washington trading bellicose threats against one another's territories, 72 percent of U.S. citizens are anxious the USA will go to war during the next four years, according to a Thursday NBC News/Survey Monkey poll.
