Tillerson says U.S. in contact with N. Korea over possible nuclear talks

Nuclear Disarmament or Non-Proliferation Regime

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and President Donald Trump wait for a luncheon with USA and African leaders at the Palace Hotel during the 72nd United Nations General Assembly on September 20, 2017 in NY. "We have a couple, three channels open to Pyongyang", Tillerson said on Saturday, according to The New York Times.

His comments come a day after Mr Tillerson revealed that United States officials had some communication channels open with Pyongyang, despite the escalating war of words between the leaders of both countries.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has confirmed that Washington is in direct contact with Pyongyang in an effort to cool the nuclear showdown between the two countries.

"We're probing, so stay tuned", Tillerson had told the USA media in Beijing, adding: "We ask, 'Would you like to talk?' We have lines of communications to Pyongyang - we're not in a dark situation, a blackout".

Millions of young men and 1.22 million women said they wanted sign up to counter the us since Friday, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported. North Korea's foreign minister also said that Trump's comments made the possibility of a missile attack on the U.S. mainland "all the more inevitable". The U.S.is in direct communication with the regime, he said, adding, "we can talk to them, we do talk to them". The U.S. insists negotiations must lead to denuclearization, while North Korea wants the world to accept it as a nuclear-armed state.

While Tillerson has said similarly moderate things before - in August he noted North Korea's "restraint" and said the US wanted more goodwill gestures from the regime - his latest remarks in Beijing appeared tailored for a Chinese audience.

Chinese President Xi Jinping (R) meets with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 30, 2017.

Washington has no diplomatic ties with Kim's autocratic regime, and has been leaning on Beijing to rein in its neighbor's behavior through tougher sanctions.

"As stated by the US State Department, North Korea has shown no interest in serious dialogue". But we have to assume that Tillerson has gotten a lot of advice from the Chinese about toning down the rhetoric and looking for a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

U.S. -North Korean communications are long-standing. "They're a little overheated right now, and I think we need to calm them down first".

"At present it's an impasse, neither the United States nor North Korea dares to initiate a war despite fierce rhetoric", he said.

Trump has vacillated between direct personal attacks on the North Korean leader and a willingness to negotiate.

A State Department official told Business Insider on Sunday that though the U.S. has been "probing through our normal channels", North Korean officials have not responded "with any indication that they want to engage in substantive discussions".
