Senator Calls For Withdrawal Of President's Drug Czar Nomination

Tom Marino

"Despite these devastating numbers and the human lives lost as a result", Manchin wrote, "the legislation that Congressman Marino pushed has tied the hands of the DEA in their efforts to enforce our nation's laws and ensure that these wholesalers and other industry actors alert authorities to these suspicious orders instead of simply profiting from them".

President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday that Rep. Tom Marino, a Pennsylvania Republican, has withdrawn his name from consideration to become the nation's next drug czar.

The investigation by 60 Minutes and the Post essentially fingered Marino as the man behind legislation that allowed pharmaceutical distributors to flood American communities with millions of opioid pills.

The Post report said the law championed by Marino "makes it virtually impossible" for the DEA to freeze suspect narcotic shipments from drug companies.

Marino was nominated to lead the National Office of Drug Control Policy, a key role in efforts to tackle the epidemic in opioid addiction and abuse that Trump on Monday called a "massive problem", saying that he would make a major announcement on the subject next week.

"As far as Tom Marino, so he was a very early supporter of mine, the great state of Pennsylvania".

And so he has. Cuomo asks when Manchin complains that the bill's laxity wasn't explained to him at the time.

Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn co-sponsored the bill with Marino.

One presumes all of the disgusting consequences of this bill were "unintended", but that doesn't excuse the thoroughgoing bipartisan effort to ignore the consequences that should have been obvious to everyone in government, since the DEA people tracking this stuff screamed bloody murder at the idea of softening the DEA's powers in regards opioid distribution.

"And Tom Marino said, 'Look, I'll take a pass".

Chief DEA Administrative Law Judge John J. Mulrooney II agreed. It sailed through Congress and was passed by unanimous consent, a parliamentary procedure reserved for bills considered to be noncontroversial. One man at the DEA, John Rannazzisi, warned that the sponsors were "supporting criminals", a claim that was so outrageous that its hyperbole overshadowed Rannazzisi's warnings, which in the end no one heeded on either side of the aisle.

The legislation and Marino's role in pushing it were the subject of a Times article past year.

Almost nine months into his presidency, Trump has been criticized for not taking more substantial actions on his campaign pledge to tackle America's opioid epidemic, which disproportionately affects numerous areas that were key to his victory.

"This is an issue that was passed without any objection by the House and Senate and signed by the White House".
