Police release driver after crash near London museums

Car crashes into several people after mounting curb near Natural History Museum

The 47-year-old man was arrested on "suspicion of unsafe driving" after a vehicle jumped the pavement and hit pedestrians near London's Natural History Museum Saturday, London's Metropolitan Police said.

"The incident is a road traffic investigation and not a terrorist-related incident", London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Detective constable Darren Case said: "Because of where this collision occurred and the number of pedestrians involved, I fully appreciate the concern and alarm this incident caused".

Peter McKenna, deputy director of operations for the London Ambulance Service, said 11 patients were treated, mostly for leg and head injuries. She said she was told by police injuries sustained were minor.

The arrested man has not yet been charged with any offence and inquiries continue. Masood acted alone, police said, but may have been inspired by ISIS.

Armed police officers were deployed, with enquiries to establish the circumstances and motive undertaken.

Britain is on its second-highest security alert level, meaning that an attack by militants is considered highly likely.

Vehicles have been used before to target pedestrians in London, including at London Bridge in June which claimed eight lives.

The incident happened at around 2:30 p.m. local time when the black auto struck the pedestrians.

"If you have any information about this incident, please call 101". The Ambulance Service said it was responding.

The Metropolitan Police in a statement said he was taken into custody following the incident on Exhibition Road in Southern Kensington and was later arrested.

Witnesses said the auto mounted the sidewalk near the London museum, which is a major tourist attraction along with the neighboring Science Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum.

Downing Street said the Prime Minister was being kept up-to-date on developments.

"I was getting off the Tube at South Kensington station, the doors opened and about 50 people came running down the Tube station escalator".
