Legendary host Monty Hall dies at 96

Report: “Let's Make a Deal” host Monty Hall passes away at 96

Monty Hall, the friendly and engaging host of the long-running television game show "Let's Make a Deal", has died.

Born Monty Halparin in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Canada, Hall grew up during the Depression. But the enduring, mystifying appeal of Hall was how much, how deeply, the contestants loved him, even though they shouldn't have: He was a resident trickster god, a double-agent, always working against them to ensure the show would land, would have stakes, would get people talking.

In addition to his philanthropic work and hosting duties, Monty Hall also acted in TV shows and commercials. Sharon, a top TV Executive and Richard, TV producer, are contributors for productions offscreen while Gleason a Tony-award winning actress. The story the show sold you was that audience members wore costumes to attract Hall's attention - but everyone was dressed as a chicken, or a clown, or a cowboy. His life and legacy is a blessing to people everywhere #LMADRIP Monty Hall Let's just pray he picked the right doorBTW a lovely man and, briefly, an excellent hockey announcer for The New York Rangers https://t.co/0wRMGBdtmaRIP Monty Hall.

Wayne Brady has been the current host since 2009.

"Let's Make a Deal" was Hall's brainchild along with his business partner, Stefan Hatos. But it was Hall who was lastingly identified as "TV's big dealer", as the show put it, something he found at least mildly disconcerting.

"In 1 percent of the cases, they didn't", Hall said.

Using his wealth and fame to help others, he raised millions for charity over his lifetime, saying "when you grow up poor, you identify with people in need". He lost his wife, Marilyn, this past June.

He is survived by two daughters, a son, a brother and 5 grandchildren.
