Google, Cisco team up for 'hybrid cloud' project

Diane Greene

Cisco and Google are making a big play when it comes to hybrid cloud, specifically partnering to deliver a solution that works across on-premises and the Google Cloud Platform.

The trend of companies and consumers opting to access computing power as services hosted online, instead of owning and maintaining their own software, has led to booming growth for Amazon Web Services and Microsoft's Azure offerings.

Mr. Robbins is counting on new cloud services to help turn around Cisco by moving further away from its legacy hardware.

Cisco Systems and Google announced a hybrid cloud partnership this week created to securely deliver distributed enterprise applications and services across Google Cloud Platform and on-premise infrastructure.

Companies can use the new offering to run, secure and monitor workloads, and thus plan their cloud migration "at their own pace", while avoiding vendor lock in (except with Google, of course...).

"We wanted to enable applications to take advantage of the best of the cloud, and seamlessly integrate with existing IT assets on-premises", Kit Compton, vice president of cloud platform and solutions for Cisco, said in a post on the company blog.

Cisco, which in May announced job cuts, announced this week it cut a deal to buy U.S. cloud communications firm BroadSoft for an overall purchase price of approximately $1.9 billion. "This is what we hear customers asking for".

Amazon Web Services now dominates the market for cloud-based infrastructure services, while Microsoft's Azure occupies the number-two position, according to recent figures from the Synergy Research Group. This allows customers to transition nearly seamlessly to a cloud-based workflow, which in turn allows businesses to develop and deploy their product in a vast variety of use cases and scenarios. The solution also offers a hyperconverged platform that supports existing apps and cloud-native Kubernetes environments, along with a uniform way to connect, secure, manage, and monitor microservices with Istio. Dell's unit, Pivotal, makes it easier for companies to get started developing software, acting like an operating system for the cloud.

The new Cisco-Google solution will be available to a limited number of customers in the first part of 2018, and will be generally available later in the year.

Cisco and Google Wednesday unveiled a blockbuster sweeping hybrid cloud partnership that provides the networking giant with a seamless bridge to next-generation public cloud technologies including the Google Kubernetes container orchestration platform.

The partnership also extends Cisco's multicloud portfolio and Google Cloud's hybrid cloud technologies (including Kubernetes, Istio and Apigee). "They understand what large companies want and need". "Kubernetes is about seeding the industry with open source standards for application development and operations that aim to disintermediate workloads from a specific IaaS provider". At the time, partners told CRN that the offering, which boasts pricing that appeals to customers evaluating private and public cloud options, could significantly alter the cloud market.
