Fourball romp puts United States in control of Presidents Cup

Fourball romp puts United States in control of Presidents Cup

We don't need to go through the blow-by-blow of a blowout.

Having fallen two points behind after Thursday's play, the worldwide team would have been confident of chopping down the gap a little in the fourballs on Friday. But after two days of give and take, it's been the back half of Stricker's lineup that has turned this year's matches into what is shaping up to be another blowout.

Both players sat out Thursday's opening foursomes session and both played like they had something to prove.

"We're going to keep the pedal down", Hoffman said. "We are all capable out here but we definitely understood what [Stricker] wanted to do".

But if the play of Hoffman and Chappell was a pleasant surprise, Justin Thomas' performance has likely exceeded even his own lofty expectations.

Another International team member who had a day to forget was India's Anirban Lahiri, who was disqualified from playing the third hole after taking a practice shot out of the bunker at the second.

After two relatively simple victories, they will go up against the global squad of Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace - the best tandem for the opposition who get a shot at redemption after losing to the Americans on Friday.

But Leishman could not hole his putt, he and Jason Day having spent a good part of the day ahead in their match against Mickelson and Kevin Kisner.

Nevertheless, further victories followed for the hosts, as world number one Dustin Johnson and partner Brooks Koepka beat Jhonattan Vegas and Adam Scott 3&2 before Kevin Kisner and Phil Mickelson finished 1-UP on Australians Marc Leishman and Jason Day.

Also scoring points for the USA were Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson, who birdied the final two holes for a 3&2 decision over Australia's Adam Scott and Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas, and Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas with a 3&2 victory over South Africans Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace.

The United States were threatening to run away with another Presidents Cup after a four-ball rout on Friday that left a worldwide team reeling and searching for answers. For the math-challenged, that means the event could be over before Sunday's singles session.

It's sad to say that barring an utter miracle and a complete turnaround in form from some of his players, Nick Price's men are staring down the barrel of another losing Presidents Cup campaign.

"Playing for my country", Reed said when asked what brings out the best in him on a team.

"It was a lot of fun out there".

As the global stars remained largely irrelevant, the USA enjoyed a boost on what is normally moving day at the biennial match.

At one point of the day the worldwide team led three of the five matches and looked likely to haul itself back into the contest.

There was no such rally on Friday.

Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Hadwin, International, halved with Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth, United States.

- Justin Thomas, on being the first USA team to beat Oosthuizen and Grace.

If the U.S. team bags a clean sweep of the best-ball format, they will clinch the Presidents Cup before the Sunday singles matches for the first time in the event's 23-year history.

Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka, United States, def. Adam Scott and Jhonattan Vegas, International, 3 and 2.

Tiger Woods, the US assistant captain, tried to intervene on their behalf, and Spieth argued his case, but the ruling stood.

Even on this side of the Hudson River, the '27 Yankees are considered the greatest team ever assembled.

"A really special day for us", said U.S. captain Steve Stricker.
