Facebook Hiring 1000 to Review Ads Amid Russia Political Scandal

The company also introduced several updates to the ad-buying process, including tighter restrictions on content and improved rules to force advertisers to demonstrate their authenticity before they can make purchases.

About 44 percent of the ads were seen before election, while 56 percent were seen afterward, Elliot Schrage, the company's vice president of policy and communications, wrote in a blog post. After complaints by the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee, the company made a decision to give them up after all. Those companies have come under increasing pressure from Capitol Hill to investigate Russian meddling and are facing the possibility of new regulations that could affect their massive advertising businesses.

Facebook says an estimated 10 million people saw at least one of the 3,000 political ads it says were bought by accounts linked to the Russian government.

The decision to hire more employees comes following the revelation that a Russian company shelled out money to release ads on Facebook to influence the US election.

Are you bothered by fake news, systematic misinformation campaigns and Facebook "dark posts" - micro-targeted ads not visible to the public - aimed at African-Americans to discourage them from voting?

The company turned 3,000 ads over to three congressional committees Monday as part of their investigations into Russian influence in the 2016 election. Zuck went so far as to deem any notions of Facebook's connection to the political outcome "crazy" to protect his site's reputation, but the controversy had recently escalated.

Facebook said the ads addressed social and political issues and ran in the United States between 2015 and 2017.

Last month, after reports surfaced that the social media giant enabled advertisers to reach "Jew haters", Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg - also of Jewish origin - apologised, saying the company was now strengthening its ad policies.

Burr and Warner have scheduled a news conference Wednesday to discuss their investigation, which Burr said was meant to explain "the things we are either close to closing the book on or have closed the book on". Once the internal investigation has been completed Google intends to share the findings with the congressional officials. "I don't want anyone to use our tools to undermine democracy", Zuckerberg said in a video message.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Sunday, October 1, released a Facebook post asking for forgiveness for the fruits of his work building and working on Facebook.

Donald Trump barely squeaked by with an electoral college win, and with these Facebook numbers, it's becoming increasingly clear that he only did that with the help of the Russians posting fake news on Facebook.
