US bombers drill over Korean peninsula

Japan's Abe, UK May pledge cooperation on North Korea threat

O'Shaughnessy, commander of the U.S. Pacific Air Forces, said in a statement. "This complex mission clearly demonstrates our solidarity with our allies and underscores the broadening cooperation to defend against this common regional threat".

The U.S. and South Korean militaries conducted live-fire bombing exercises in South Korea on Thursday, an act later called "rash" by North Korea's state-run news agency.

North Korea on Tuesday flew a potentially nuclear-capable Hwasong-12 intermediate range missile over northern Japan and later called it a "meaningful prelude" to containing the us territory of Guam.

The Ulchi-Freedom Guardian, the 11-day joint military exercises the United States and South Korea completed Thursday, involved tens of thousands of US and South Korean troops, although the exercises were conducted largely through computer simulations.

Following the meeting, the council called the North Korean ballistic missile test "outrageous", according to the Chicago Tribune, and called on North Korea to take "immediate, concrete actions" to reduce tensions.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Thursday denied any divergence of views with President Donald Trump over the response to North Korea's recent missile launch, after he appeared to undercut the president's tough rhetoric. "All options are on the table", Trump explained.

Officials say the USS John Paul Jones detected and tracked a medium-range ballistic missile that was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility. Japanese Prime Shinzo Abe said he and visiting British Prime Minister Theresa May agreed to urge China, North Korea's lone major ally, to do more to rein in North Korea. In July, the US and South Korean militaries also fired missiles into South Korean waters.

The 15-member U.N. Security Council on Tuesday condemned the firing of the missile over Japan as "outrageous" and demanded that North Korea halt its weapons programs. But Kim put the threat on hold later, saying he would watch the USA behavior a "little more".

In response to the two missile tests the United Nations passed the largest package of sanctions ever against North Korea on August 5.

The launch marks the second time in four days that North Korea has tested its missiles.

The Obama administration had provided $1 million to North Korea on January 19, one day before Trump took office, according to Voice of America.

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said the situation on the peninsula was serious.

"The current situation on the Korean peninsula is not a screenplay, it's not a computer game".

Russia and China have created a roadmap for a settlement on the Korean Peninsula that is designed to promote the gradual easing of tensions and the creation of a mechanism for lasting peace and security, the Russian leader added.
