The Pentagon Comes Clean About Thousands Of US Troops In Afghanistan

President Trump announces Afghanistan strategy in Fort Myer in Arlington Virginia

U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis says he has signed orders to deploy additional American troops to Afghanistan beyond the 11,000 now serving in the war-torn country. Mattis has now signed orders on a planned escalation of the Afghan War.

In response to a question about the 3,900 troops that are authorized to deploy in Afghanistan, he said: "The US secretary has not made that decision", and could not comment.

In an announcement, that Pentagon claims is for greater transparency, it declared that there were 11,000 USA troops now deployed in Afghanistan.

Mattis on Thursday refused to confirm reports that he's sending an additional 4,000 us troops to join the 11,000 who already are there.

"It is more advisers, it is more enablers, fire support, for example", Mattis said, adding that no additional troops had moved in yet.

The revised troop figures, announced by the Pentagon on Monday, were the result of a new method of accounting for USA soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines serving in Afghanistan, Pentagon press secretary Dana White said Monday. "No deployment orders have been issued", he said.

White and McKenzie said the Pentagon would also reveal the actual number of forces serving in Iraq and Syria after a thorough review.

The Pentagon reported that usa troops killed the leader of ISIS-K, Abu Sayed, in a drone airstrike on July 11.

Reuters reports that previously disclosed troop numbers omitted temporary forces that were brought in to circumvent limits imposed by former president Barack Obama.

He said that while "my original instinct was to pull out", after speaking with USA military leaders, they determined that Afghanistan could not be allowed to fall into the hands of terrorist groups such as the Taliban and ISIS.

According to TIME, the president's decision to reinforce American military commitment was ratified after months considerable evaluation within the administration over the potential reward of stabilising Afghanistan to the point where its own forces can prevent a Taliban takeover and contain other militant threats outweighs the risk involved. And last week, President Donald Trump indicated the United States must recommit to the war in Afghanistan, and White House officials said he plans to increase troop levels there by about 4,000.

The disclosure came after Defense Secretary Jim Mattis expressed frustration with how troops in war zones were counted. "When we have something to announce, we'll let you know", she said.
